In perfect shooting form and with eyes on the rim, junior Tyler Kuehl is about to shoot his next basket in the last game of the season against Marquette High School. Kuehl has been playing basketball since he was 5. “Even though I played basketball all my life, the game-winning shots can be pressure, it's confidence. If you're going into that shot and not thinking that you're gonna make it, it's obviously not going in. And if you believe, [it will]. That's the only way you can succeed,” Kuehl said.

Preparing for A.P. U.S. History test, Senior Chris Gray opens the preamble of the U.S. Constitution to review the six goals of the Consitution. Taking U.S. history has always been a graduation requirement in schools. “It is essential for everyone to learn about the constitution, because it is important to know your rights,” Gray said. “Even though the original Constitution was written in 1787, and the American landscape has changed from a predominantly farming society to a digital/technological one, our constitution is very relevant today as it was 239 years ago because our rights are the same.”

Working on their next articles, senior Elle Rotter, junior Elizabeth Franklin, junior Emily Early and senior Addie Gleason edit pieces for publishing during journalism class. As members of the Editorial Board, they meet once a week to discuss school happenings, the latest news, opinion trends and analytics to decide topics meaningful for readers. “As an editor, I typically see many stories through various stages, and it's amazing getting to work with so many talented writers. Our stories are typically in-depth, well-researched and well-written, and it's exciting to see that a writer's hard work paid off, especially when they receive a lot of engagement from the audience,” Opinions and A&E Editor Franklin said. “I'd love to see more interactivity within stories on the Pathfinder. I think the Pathfinder can, and should, be a trailblazer in the interactivity arena.”

While students use social media to connect virtually to others and access information, social media platforms use algorithms to personalize the information presented to users. “I like that recommendations make it a lot easier to find content that interests me,” junior Michael Emerson said. “But it also frightens me because sometimes it makes it hard to get off the scrolling and clicking cycle and makes me feel like I‘m glued to my phone.”

Junior David Hawiger poses in front of the St. Louis University Medical Center, where he had the opportunity to shadow the hospital’s medical team and research at the Pharmacology and Physiology lab. Hawiger participated in the lab’s ongoing studies to understand signal transductions induced by protein receptors in models of pain and cancer. “It was a great opportunity not only to work alongside physician-researchers but also to use lab equipment and to see and feel some of the structures you read about in class,” Hawiger said.

Focusing in, sophomore Brian Wright looks through the eyepiece of his microscope to observe a species of microorganisms. During Biology lab, Wright used a microscope to study the structure of a fungal cell and its similarities with plant cells which provides hints to evolution. ”It was amazing making connections about how we may have evolved from tiny single-cell organisms,” Wright said. “I found microscopes interesting because you can observe things that you can’t regularly see, and dive into the depths of our nature.”
