Pathfinder

Pronouns: she/her

I am a senior this year, and it will be my fourth year on staff. The Pathfinder has pushed me out of my comfort zone, made me more outgoing and helped me to become a better writer. In school, I am involved in many clubs, and I also do field hockey and pole-vaulting. When I’m not writing for the Pathfinder, I love spending time with my friends and family, working out, reading and baking. I have definitely found a love for journalism through the Pathfinder, and I plan on continuing with journalism as a career. I hope to make the world a more positive and kind place through my writing.

Attending French Club’s Mardi Gras party, juniors Nicolle Emert, Katie Jauss and Jame Wild dance to a French song. Prior to the party, club members signed up to bring food and the activities also included listening to music and completed word searches. “[The party] was just everyone hanging out and having fun,” Emert said. “I never really travel outside of the United States, so this was kind of like a glimpse into my future because I plan on traveling. Exposing myself to [the French] culture before I can see it in real life is really cool.”

At the district level, there are currently open positions for two nurses, four teachers, eight bus drivers, 10 teaching assistants and 22 custodians. Principal Jeremy Mitchell would like to encourage individuals to explore job opportunities in Parkway. “I think in my heart of hearts that we’re a pretty good place that people would want to work for. It’s just figuring out what that looks like post-COVID,” Mitchell said. “Before you say no, or don’t consider it, try to talk to folks that have been here, whether it be students and staff, and try to get their opinion. By having conversations, your opinions of working in the educational system may change.”

Painting the letters of her parking spot, senior Paige Matthys-Pearce participates in painting day. Matthys-Pearce painted a starry background with a quote written in French, which says ‘don’t forget who you are.’ “I'm happy that I got to participate in this new tradition because I think it's a great way for us seniors to leave a mark here, even though the spots will get painted over at the end of the year. Pulling into the colorful parking lot each morning brings me so much joy, and all the different designs highlight how unique everyone is,” Matthys-Pearce said. “Even though we sat under the sun in a hot parking lot for seven hours straight, it was a fun experience that I hope future classes will continue.”

Sophomores Mira Nalbandian and Anna Newberry prepare to sell stickers during first lunch to support the ALIVE program. Nalbandian was grateful for the opportunity to support a cause that was important to her. “If you see other people supporting something, it makes you feel better by supporting it because nobody likes to be alone when they're doing something,” Nalbandian said. “If you have a bunch of people who buy stickers and you can see the stickers, you will think this is a cause that matters, and it's okay to support it.”

Trotier began this tradition four years ago, to bring awareness to the fundraiser and raise money. “Even in a wealthy community, there’s still so many families that don’t have money to even eat through the holidays,” Trotier said. “I think it’s an important issue to bring up to kids that may not realize that somebody sitting in the classroom with them needs food.”
