Continuing their story, juniors Emma Pence, Chloe Stillman and Ruthie Vierling participate in an activity at a Spanish Club meeting Jan. 24. Club members added one sentence in Spanish before passing the paper onto the next student. Chloe Stillman had some really creative ideas about Harry Styles concerts. Shes just hilarious, and I love being around her, Vierling said. [I think it is] important to experience other cultures and step out of your own comfort zone because you have to not understand it at first to understand it.

Balancing monkeys on a tree, senior Fernando Gonzalez participates in a Beta Omicron Kappa (BOK) volunteering opportunity at the Early Childhood Center. BOK members went to the Early Childhood Center once every month to play with and read to the children. “I enjoyed going and watching the kids’ faces light up when we played with them while they waited for their parents,” Gonzalez said. “The little boy was a lot better at balancing the monkeys than I was, as you can see with my intense focus and his calm demeanor.”

Shooting a free throw, senior Tia Reed plays basketball against Lafayette High School Jan. 7. With a final score of 32-59, Reed and her team had to adapt to sudden changes before the game. “I was feeling frustrated during this game because one of my teammates wasn’t playing because she was hurt, so I had to step up, and the freshman had to step up. We were all playing different positions [than usual],” Reed said. “My teammates and the fun team environment keep me motivated.”

History teacher Mel Trotier plays his guitar during the passing period to collect donations for the anual Social Studies Department canned food drive. Trotier began this tradition four years ago, to bring awareness to the fundraiser and raise money. “Even in a wealthy community, there’s still so many families that don’t have money to even eat through the holidays,” Trotier said. “I think it’s an important issue to bring up to kids that may not realize that somebody sitting in the classroom with them needs food.”

Moving her hand to to copy the leader, freshman Harlei Young participates in the ‘say it and do it’ activity in the third common ground of the year. The main focus of this activity was to examine the concept of honor and if students would remove themselves from the game if they did not follow the leader. “Common Ground is great because it gives us a place to ask questions and a group of people to talk to,” Young said. “We play games as a group and it lets us get to know other students.”
