Teaming up with seniors Chase Haun, Brock Sweet and Mitchell Seavey, senior Ben Gingrich performs a comedy act during Mr. Longhorn dress rehearsals on Nov. 16. Gingrich signed up after being encouraged by Longhorn Council’s recruiting efforts. “We’ve got a lot of talent out there, a lot of funny acts, a lot of impressive acts — it’s gonna be a good show. My Sports Lit teacher Casey Holland encouraged me to do it and branch out and try something different from what I’d usually do,” Gingrich said. “Bring positive attitudes, and be ready to be wowed.”

For the past few days, the senior contestants for the annual charity pageant Mr. Longhorn have rehearsed in the theater, practicing their acts, learning a group dance and mastering the art of swaggering across the stage. This training culminated in a dress rehearsal that ran through each performance with props, costumes and technical effects — including lighting, microphones and overhead music.

There are three unique portions in which individual contestants participate — an occupation wear, a talent show and finally, a formal wear. The contestants kick off the night with a group dance choreographed by Longhorn Line.

“I’m looking forward to all the great and fantastic acts that the boys will be putting on. I’m doing Mr. Longhorn because it’s my senior year — I had to go out with a bang,” senior Joseph Federer said. “One of the groups that consists of [seniors] Chase Haun, Brock Sweet, Ben Gingrich [is my biggest competition]. Mitchell Seavey has a good act, but I’ll leave it at that. My act’s gonna be a surprise.”

In addition to entertaining a crowd, the pageant aims to raise money for Annie’s Hope, LoCo’s 2023-24 charity — though contestants were also motivated by the chance to win the title of Mr. Longhorn.

“I can’t wait to have fun with my friends, put on a good show and make it funny for the crowd,” Sweet said. “I think Chase Haun is a sleeper pick, he’s good competition, but winning would be pretty cool. Mr. Longhorn is a pretty big deal. Watch out for Sweet, man, watch out for Sweet.”

Some current contestants took note from previous Mr. Longhorn hopefuls who participated in years prior.

“Both of my brothers have done [Mr. Longhorn], so I’ve been watching and waiting for a while,” senior Brayden Dolan said. “I think I got the win, it’d be pretty cool, but we’re just going for a good time.”

Other contestants gained inspiration from celebrities and popular shows. One group, consisting of Dolan and Federer as well as seniors Brian Wright and Carson Rakers, performed a Jimmy Fallon-inspired skit. Meanwhile, seniors Cameron Hickert, Caden Keller and Justin Grove danced in a choreography inspired by “Mean Girls.”

“I’m honestly excited for my dance and being able to do it in front of the crowd, but I’m also kind of scared,” Grove said. “Winning would be an honor, I don’t know if I’m fully deserving of that, but that’d be awesome.”

Pronouns: she/her Grade: 12 Years on staff: 4 What is your favorite piece of literature?"Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" is such a classic piece of literature that can still resonate with many people in the U.S. today. Cassie, the book’s protagonist was and is still refreshing to me: she’s a child, so the way that racism and discrimination impact her made it easy for me, also a child at the time, to understand some of the bigotry and prejudice that many of my ancestors faced, especially living in the South. Cassie’s a little spitfire, sure, but she’s also just a child, and at the end of the day, she embodies what America’s intrinsic racism can do to childish innocence like hers. Who is your hero? My hero is Ida B. Wells. She was an excellent journalist and was always dedicated to finding the truth, no matter the obstacles — and as a Black woman reporting in the South, she had a lot of obstacles. Although my journalistic career isn’t as nearly as dangerous as hers was, her work has paved the way for numerous other Black writers and journalists in the field, and it reminds me to always keep digging, even when the subjects are obscure or controversial in today’s overall political climate. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? I'm not going to lie, I could probably shovel down buckets of those Welch's fruit snacks.
