As students walk past the cork board hanging outside the swimming pool, one name sticks out in particular: freshman Maria Newton.
On their road to state, juniors Ava Larson and Claire Martin competed against Lafayettes top State ranked doubles team. When Claire and I beat Lafayette in team districts, I think deep down we both knew we could do it; but it was awesome when we actually did it, Larson said.

The Missouri State Tennis Tournament begins in Springfield, MO, today. For the second time in a row,West will be sending their top-ranked doubles team to the competition. Last time, it was alumni William Tong and junior Kenji Yanaba. This time, it will be juniors Claire Martin and Ava Larson playing for their own state title.

As the fall sports come to a close in their regular season (and for some sports into pre-State competition), the winter sports at Parkway West are starting up open gyms.
Junior Luke Christensen begins the 500 meter race at the Lafayette vs Parkway West meet on Sept. 3. Christensen has been swimming for 11 years.  “I was excited but not shocked when he qualified.  I expect Luke to get a few more state cuts and to continue to improve his time before the state meet, coach Allison Zeller said.
