Coloring a portrait, freshman Rachel Thomson sits at her desk. Thomson’s mother, an artist, is her biggest influence. “She’s encouraged me to keep going from the beginning. I wasn’t that good when I first started, but I’m lucky she encouraged me to keep at it. I think if she didn’t support me, I would have stopped drawing a long time ago,” Thomson said.

Preparing to execute another deal, junior Kayvon Rezaei examines his stock market portfolio. Rezaei has been trading stocks for over a year and spends time after school every day analyzing graphs and making trades. “The best part about doing the stock market for me is when you work hard and earn the money,” Rezaei said.

PARKWAY FOOD DRIVE//🥫✨
Constructing towers from donated food items, Longhorn Council Junior Class President Paige Matthys-Pearce prepares to transport the boxes back to the gym foyer to get them tallied for the Parkway Holiday Cup. The five Parkway high schools joined forces to collect donations for the Parkway Pantry and dress up for spirit days in a friendly competition. “I’ve seen a lot more spirit week participation than in the past because we’re competing against the other schools and people are excited about beating them. However, it’s also just for a good cause. We’ve done a food drive earlier this year, and had little participation, but the spirit week raises awareness and we’ve seen so much involvement this time around,” Matthys-Pearce said. “The competitive nature of the Holiday cup has motivated more people to donate to the Parkway Pantry. Just in the span of four days we’ve received almost 1,000 donations. As we go into winter break, it’s important that everyone in our community feels supported and has what they need.”

Ung began tutoring this week and hopes to make a difference in the mindset of students regarding virtual learning. “I know everyone’s struggling in their unique situations right now, so I figured by tutoring, I might take some things off people’s plates,” Ung said. “I want kids to feel confident in their school work so they don’t feel bogged down by everything going on.”

“Despite unorthodox season varsity girls volleyball finishes second place at state”

Concluding a huddle, the girls varsity volleyball team puts their hands in and prepares to take the court. The team finished with a record of 12-5 alongside a second place finish at the state tournament. “It still feels surreal, but I couldn’t think of a better way to have ended my senior season,” senior and team captain Carly Kuehl said. “I think going into the season not thinking we would have a season makes it even better. At the beginning, we weren’t really working for an end goal. As we kept moving on and kept winning, my excitement and desire to keep winning grew. I’m just so proud of my team and happy that this is how I got to end my volleyball career.”

At the beginning of the school year, some teachers taught from home while others taught from school, all while trying hard to build a connection with students. “It’s been weird doing it all virtual. I feel like I’ve been in the actual building twice,” English Teacher Kaleb Schumer said.

Measuring water from her homemade filter, senior Libby Janson finishes up a lab for Environmental Engineering. Janson prefers to do labs for science at school more than at home. “I miss being able to work with others in class and see how their labs are going,” Janson said. “When you do it by yourself you can’t see all the other ideas people have.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL//💪✨
Weighing her options, junior Shemaiah Saunders aims to pass the ball and cut to the basket for a shot. This season, Saunders has had to play her games while wearing a mask. “It’s difficult [with] other kids playing sports trying to breath and feel comfortable,” Saunders said. “But COVID-19 hasn’t really changed much… I’ve known most of my teammates since elementary school, so it’s just cool to continue to play with them and graduate with them.”

FaceTiming her grandma who lives in Las Vegas, senior Eva Phillips and her father celebrate Thanksgiving virtually on Nov. 26. Normally, Phillips and her family would have the annual feast with extended family; but, due to the pandemic this year, they decided to stay home and celebrate over the internet. “It was calm. I liked the quiet of it,” Phillips said. “I almost liked it more than doing a huge Thanksgiving. I don’t know if I’d call it the full Thanksgiving experience, but I still enjoyed it.”

“A splash in the right direction: junior Will Bonnett makes history”
At the state competition Saturday Nov. 14, junior Will Bonnett celebrates as he looks at his times and realizes he beat another record. Bonnett came out on top, earning first in his two individual races and beating five individual school records. “I think it is super exciting to be able to be a part of our school history,” Bonnett said. “It’s definitely very rewarding to be able to see the work that I’ve put in and show it by being able to break those records.”
