    PHOTO OF THE WEEK// ❄️✨ Flying down a snow-c PHOTO OF THE WEEK// ❄️✨
Flying down a snow-covered hill on a bright orange toboggan, sophomore Grant Kilpatrick sleds during his Competitive Sports and Games class Feb. 18. Due to the snowstorm earlier in the week, physical education teacher Tommie Rowe brought the students outside to sled for half the class period. “When Coach Rowe first told us we were going to get to go sledding, I was surprised because that’s not something that I would think of doing during a class,” Kilpatrick said. “After my first few times going down the hill, normally I tried going down while standing. I tried this several times, but only getting about halfway down the hill before falling and rolling down the rest of the way. The funniest part about sledding for me was [when] we would lose control and the sled would flip. [My favorite moment was] just being able to try doing different things and have time to laugh and interact with classmates.”

Executing a tilt jump, senior and Poms Captain Emma Roth performs a routine choreographed by fellow teammates. Participating in Poms for 4 years, Roth will perform for the last time this senior night. “My favorite part of my senior season has been making up the dances and teaching them to the girls,” Roth said. “Then when we perform, I like seeing that all of the hard work payed off.”

Learning about DNA charges, sophomores Lucas Escandon, Cami Levy and Ben Scott work together on a lab. The group, in their biology class, had to adhere to COVID-19 restrictions. “Being in close proximity with my classmates felt a little weird with the masks and seeing people after nine months of at-home learning. It didn’t really impact the lab all that much, it was just [us] trying not to touch everything, so other people could touch the tools,” Escandon said.

Volunteering is not new to Connors, as she also volunteered at a homeless shelter and served lunch. “I enjoy helping the community and making a difference whenever I can,” Connors said. “I wanted to volunteer because I wanted to use my time doing something that betters someone else.”

Picking up her paintbrush, senior Claire Hardy works on her next piece for AP Drawing. Hardy centered all of her projects on one sustained investigation question: “What impact do people have on me?” “We get to choose our topic and the materials we use which is nice because you can make the piece more personal,” Hardy said. “While the freedom of this class is great, it [also] poses a challenge because the options are endless when starting a new project”.

In Convergence Journalism class, sophomores Jordan Scales and Thomas Bruns watch the Inauguration Wednesday, Jan. 20. Despite it being President Joe Biden’s inauguration, many viewers focused on Bernie Sanders’ mittens. “When I heard about the inauguration I didn’t really care too much about it,” Scales said. “I didn’t have any favorite parts of it because I don’t really care about politics. Bernie Sanders’ mittens looked pretty good though.”

Coloring a portrait, freshman Rachel Thomson sits at her desk. Thomson’s mother, an artist, is her biggest influence. “She’s encouraged me to keep going from the beginning. I wasn’t that good when I first started, but I’m lucky she encouraged me to keep at it. I think if she didn’t support me, I would have stopped drawing a long time ago,” Thomson said.

Preparing to execute another deal, junior Kayvon Rezaei examines his stock market portfolio. Rezaei has been trading stocks for over a year and spends time after school every day analyzing graphs and making trades. “The best part about doing the stock market for me is when you work hard and earn the money,” Rezaei said.

Constructing towers from donated food items, Longhorn Council Junior Class President Paige Matthys-Pearce prepares to transport the boxes back to the gym foyer to get them tallied for the Parkway Holiday Cup. The five Parkway high schools joined forces to collect donations for the Parkway Pantry and dress up for spirit days in a friendly competition. “I’ve seen a lot more spirit week participation than in the past because we’re competing against the other schools and people are excited about beating them. However, it’s also just for a good cause. We’ve done a food drive earlier this year, and had little participation, but the spirit week raises awareness and we’ve seen so much involvement this time around,” Matthys-Pearce said. “The competitive nature of the Holiday cup has motivated more people to donate to the Parkway Pantry. Just in the span of four days we’ve received almost 1,000 donations. As we go into winter break, it’s important that everyone in our community feels supported and has what they need.”

Cheering on their fellow poms teammates, sophomores Allie Byergo and Cameron Chandler attend a varsity boys basketball game Jan. 8. Because of their injuries, Byergo and Chandler were not able to participate in any dancing. “It's actually pretty fun to get to go to the games since not a lot of people can right now because of COVID-19,” Byergo said. “Ever since I've been injured, even though I haven't been able to dance, it's been really good to still be a part of the team and still be able to wear poms clothes and go and represent at games.”

Principal Jeremy Mitchell measures the distance between desks to aid in contact tracing. After measuring the desks, Mitchell gave the information to Assistant Principal Kate Piffel, who used seating charts to determine close contacts. “Dr. Mitchell measures the desks to see how far apart they are because if they are within six feet [there is a] 98% chance that those students are going to have to quarantine if they're that close to another student,” Piffel said.

They had been planning their one-acts for months now, and now they don’t have the chance to see their hard work pay off,” McMorrow said. “[The school cancellation] has harmed my senior year, but I would rather everyone close to me stay safe during this time, so while I don’t like that things are being canceled, I understand that it is necessary.”
