Pro Start students raise money for the Ronald McDonald House charity

Students, teachers and  families filed into the cafeteria to vote on the best gingerbread house at the Gingerbread House Contest,  Dec. 10, hosted by Pro Start classes. The contest raised funds for the Ronald McDonald House charity.

“It was very interesting to see all the gingerbread houses that the different schools made,” sophomore Jason Zimbelmann said. “I voted for the Batman house.”

In addition to the gingerbread houses, there were tables set up for cookies, hot chocolate, coloring and face painting. Students volunteered to help out at the tables, and art club members painted faces with snowflakes, holly and ornaments.

”I was painting peoples’ faces, which was fun because there were a lot of little kids who wanted their face painted,” sophomore volunteer Sophia Spaulding said.

Students in culinary class also participated in the event, making cookies and hot cocoa and handing them out for people attending and their families.

”I made some hot cocoa, then I ate a lot of cookies that we made in cooking class and I painted faces,” sophomore volunteer Claudette Roskamp said.

There were 16 participants including competitors from other schools including North High School and the Early Childhood Learning Center. People got their first vote free, and each one after that was a dollar. There was also an opportunity to donate money to the Ronald McDonald House charity.

“The Culinary teacher from North used to enter her students in the Lydia House Gingerbread competition. She wanted to start our own so we put it together,” Culinary teacher Katie Hashley said. “We wanted to give students an opportunity to be creative while also giving to a good cause.”

The event raised $125 from all the donations and extra votes purchased.
