The boy’s basketball team lost Friday’s non-conference game to the visiting Parkway South Patriots 55-57. Senior captain/ guard Jake Socha lead all scorers with 24 points, and is averaging 18.6 points per game . Socha is second in the conference in points this season and is coming off of an impressive junior campaign in which he received second team all-conference.
“We have had a lot of close games this year but we just haven’t been able to come away with the win yet, we hope to turn it around,” Socha said.
The Longhorns started the season with a heart-breaking 62-63 loss against conference opponent Parkway North (1-2). Freshmen Center Wyatt Yess had an impressive debut recording nine points and two blocks. The 6’6 center is the first freshmen in recent memory to start on varsity at Parkway West.
“I am very honored to have the chance to play on varsity as a freshman, it’s truly a great group of guys and I am looking forward to getting better each and everyday,” Yess said.
On Dec. 4 the Longhorns visited the rival Parkway Central Colts. In a tough battle, the longhorns lost 54-69. The longhorns dominated the glass with 20 rebounds, and shot an impressive 80 percent from the free throw line. The Colts however shot 40 percent from the field, allowing them to get the victory. The Longhorns get the chance for redemption at home on Friday, Feb. 14.
“We have hung with every team we have played, and I expect nothing less as the season moves forward. We still have time to turn it around and to hopefully make it a successful season,” junior Forward Joey Twellman said.
The Longhorns look to bounce back this Friday against the Eureka wildcats (0-2).
