Fast-food restaurants have worked to create their own take on the ‘perfect’ chicken sandwich. With different toppings, and different condiments, each sandwich may taste better and different from the other. But which one is the real deal?

Ever since fast-food restaurants made their goal to create their take on chicken sandwiches, a national battle has ensued. So I decided to try and rate six different sandwiches. Each sandwich had a unique taste, toppings and buns. Every sandwich was picked up through the drive-thru and enjoyed in the comfort of my home.

> McDonald’s Hot n Spicy McChicken

> McDonald’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich

> Chick-fil-a Chicken Sandwich

> KFC Chicken Sandwich

> Culver’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich

> Panera Chef Chicken Sandwich

Each criteria of the chicken sandwich ranking was based on the following:

EXECUTION: How well did the chicken sandwich meet my expectations?

APPEARANCE: How attractive to the eye is this chicken sandwich?

TASTE: Was there an appropriate balance in flavor? Was it pleasing to the taste buds?

McDonald’s Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken

The Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken came with a Crispy, tender chicken seasoned with a bold mix of spices, topped with shredded lettuce and mayonnaise and served on a perfectly toasty bun. (Esta Kamau)

Execution: 7/10

Appearance: 4/10

Taste: 6/10

PRICE: $3

REVIEW:  When I first opened the Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken packaging, the presentation was messy. It came with mayonnaise and lettuce inside. The mayo was all over the packaging and the lettuce looked like the box had been slung across the room. I don’t think it has an appropriate balance of flavor because the pepper overpowered the sandwich. The mayonnaise did not enhance the sandwich flavor or cool down the spice of the sandwich. Overall, the sandwich was not bad as long as it had the fries to go with it.

RECOMMENDATION: This sandwich would be better without the mayonnaise and instead served with a side of ranch to ease the spice.

Should you purchase this sandwich? Why or why not?

I wouldn’t recommend this sandwich. The taste was overwhelming because of how peppery it was. The spice was there, just not as satisfying and good as I thought.

McDonald’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich

McDonald’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich is a southern-style fried chicken sandwich that’s crispy, juicy and tender perfection. It’s topped with crinkle-cut pickles and served on a toasted, buttered potato roll. (Esta Kamau)

Execution: 9/10

Appearance: 10/10

Taste: 8.5/10

PRICE: $4.29

REVIEW: With the McDonald’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich, everything about the appearance looked outstandingly good. It’s crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. The approach had me from the start, showing how shiny and enjoyable the sandwich looked. However, don’t let the appearance fool you as it did me. The chicken was dry but still good. It was served with pickles but had no additional sauce. The pickles were a bit dry for me, but the flavor was good. It came with a brioche bun, which always adds to a sandwich’s appearance. Overall, this item was one of my favorites in the appearance category but could continue to achieve the perfect all-score sandwich.

RECOMMENDATION: The sandwich was pretty good, but I recommend adding more topping options. The pickles were unflattering, giving this sandwich a soggy but hard-to-chew texture to this sandwich, even if you’re a pickle lover.

Should you purchase this sandwich? Why or why not?

I would recommend this sandwich to anyone looking for a flavorful dinner on a budget.

Chick-fil-A Original Chicken Sandwich

Chick-fil-A’s Original Chicken Sandwich had a boneless breast of chicken seasoned to perfection, freshly breaded, pressure cooked in 100% refined peanut oil and served on a toasted, buttered bun with dill pickle chips. (Esta Kamau)

Execution: 10/10

Appearance: 6/10

Taste: 10/10

PRICE: $3.05

REVIEW:  Chick-fil-a’s signature chicken sandwich was seasoned well, and the flavor was fulfilling. Seasoning is what gave this sandwich a bonus. Visually, the chicken appeared crispy. It tasted a bit dry without sauce, but when I started chewing, it became more enjoyable. I enjoyed the texture of the sandwich and was glad it wasn’t as hard to chew. The seasoning on the sandwich also gave it a plus bonus. The signature Chick-fil-a sauce I chose made the sandwich taste 10 times better. Although, any sauce option of your choice would be great.

Should you purchase this sandwich? Why or why not?

Yes! This sandwich has always been my go-to and is one of Chick-fil-a’s classics and most popular menu items. I 100% recommend this sandwich to the Longhorn community.

KFC Sandwich

The KFC Sandwich exhibits an extra crispy filet with premium pickles and mayo on a brioche-style bun. (Esta Kamau)

Execution: 9/10

Appearance: 7/10

Taste: 7/10

PRICE: $3.99

REVIEW: This was my first time trying the KFC Chicken Sandwich after being added to the menu. The chicken has a sweet flavor with the brioche buns. The buns gave the sandwich a glistening look which looked good with the crispy chicken. The sandwich came with mayo as the only option for sauce. The pickles are good, not too soggy or too unchewable. The chicken filet tasted good with just enough seasonings for my taste. This sandwich exceeded my expectations.

RECOMMENDATION: I didn’t enjoy the bun as much as I hoped. I would love for KFC to explore a different bun option to complement the already sweet chicken.

Should you purchase this sandwich? Why or why not?

I was in-between with this sandwich, it looked good, but the bun was a deal-breaker for me and did not meet my expectations.

Culver’s Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich

The Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich is made with the same premium chicken you know and love, breaded with a four-pepper blend of spices for the perfect heat level. (Esta Kamau)

Execution: 8/10

Appearance: 7.5/10

Taste: 8/10

PRICE: $5.29

REVIEW: The Culver’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich was very spicy, hence the name. It came with lettuce, tomatoes and pickles, which made the sandwich taste better because of the diverse flavors combined. I enjoyed this sandwich mainly because the chicken was crispy and full of spice and flavor. The buns were delicious, but they were flat appearance-wise and didn’t make the sandwich look as delectable. On the other hand, the sandwich was more filling than the other sandwiches I tried, which counted as a plus.

RECOMMENDATION: With this sandwich, I found the various toppings to be a considerable change compared to the other sandwiches I taste-tested but they were still very enjoyable. I would recommend changing the bun, maybe for appearance, since it looked too flat and unpleasant. Adding sauce, such as ranch, with the plentiful toppings this sandwich comes with would also be beneficial.

Should you purchase this sandwich? Why or why not?

Yes, I think it was a delicious sandwich overall. This was one of the best ones I tried. I’ve had other items off of Culvers’ menu and the food never disappoints. It looks good and matches the taste.

Panera Bread Co. Chef Chicken Sandwich

The Panera Chef Chicken Sandwich had a seasoned and seared chicken breast, parmesan crisps, emerald greens and garlic aioli on a brioche roll. (Esta Kamau)

Execution: 8/10

Appearance: 10/10

Taste: 9/10

PRICE: $11.99

REVIEW: I’ve had items from Panera Bread Co. before, and I think they have excellent food, so my expectations were high. Appearance-wise, it looked sophisticated, and the packaging was visually pleasing. It came in a cool box announcing to the consumer that it was bursting with flavor on the cover. When I began eating the sandwich, it had an even balance of flavors. The seared chicken breast it came with was very flavorful and tasted sweet and seasoned well. It came with Parmesan chips on the sandwich, which was not my favorite addition, so I took them off. Other toppings included Emerald Greens and Garlic Aioli. Everything, including the Garlic Aioli, was good. Overall this sandwich was one of my favorites, just a bit pricy.

RECOMMENDATION: The only problem with this sandwich was the Parmesan chips. I enjoyed the other toppings, including the bread buns and the chicken. This seemed to be the king of chicken sandwiches coming at almost three times the cost of its competitors. While the cost was a bit extra for a chicken sandwich, I understand the sandwich hype, but I would still recommend the price to be lowered by a bit.

Should you purchase this sandwich? Why or why not?

This sandwich was the most unique and presentable I tried out of the six. The sandwich was also really good with the chicken, buns, toppings, and sauce. I would recommend this sandwich, but it is a bit pricey compared to its peers.
