“Kiss Me Quick” single review

Twenty-two-year-old Nathan Sykes is going solo after his days as one-fifth of the British boy band The Wanted.

Best known for “Glad You Came” and “Chasing the Sun,” The Wanted broke up after their tour in 2013, and Sykes used this opportunity to branch out on his own. His debut solo song “Kiss Me Quick” topped the  US Billboard Dance Chart with a full album dropping later this year.

“Kiss Me Quick” is very different from the pop sound of his old boy band days. With a 1960s feel, Sykes’ new song successfully facilitates his transition into a solo artist.

“I surprised myself a tiny bit [with the sound], I was surrounded with music like that all the way through since I was a child,” Sykes said to Rolling Stone.

The music video for “Kiss Me Quick” also blended very well with the vibe of his song. All dark grey and white muted tones on the set, Sykes’ sound stood out. The video was directed by Emil Nava who has filmed videos for Ed Sheeran and Calvin Harris, so Sykes was in good company. The video was very different from The Wanted’s videos with a bunch of people in multiple locations opposed to a single artist on a studio set, furthering his separation and shift into a solo artist.

Unlike anything played on z107.7 or 104.9, “Kiss Me Quick” is refreshingly different. You can tell his song is personal and that makes the message more genuine. But there may be a flaw with in his first official solo song. If Sykes is hoping to draw in the same fan base, they might not be as susceptible to his new sound opposed to the old pop.

Overall, Sykes’ new song ear-catching and different, something everyone should check out. His old-style sound sets him apart from other pop artists that are well listened to right now and hopefully his new album will be somewhat similar.

Parkway West Pathfinder gives “Kiss Me Quick”  6.5/10.
