“Divergent” review

With Twilight movies coming  to a close, fans are searching for a new romance to drool over.  Although “Divergent” is listed as an action/adventure/sci-fi movie, there is a strong romantic element between the two main characters, Tobias Eaton and Beatrice Prior.

There are five factions, which a sixteen year old can choose:  Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, Candor and Dauntless.  Each teenager is suggested a faction based upon their results in the aptitude test, but they have the final decision of their fate.  Someone is considered a Divergent when their results are inconclusive, and they possess traits that fall into more than one faction.  Beatrice is a Divergent, and her final decision is to become one of the Dauntless.

Theo James, who plays Tobias, also known as “Four” for having only four fears, is a very handsome man.  He catches the eye of Tris, played by Shailene Woodley, from the moment they meet in the Dauntless faction’s pit.  They fall for each other as the movie continues and their feelings for each other are tested when Tobias is ordered to throw knifes at Tris, who stands in front of a target.  His ability to miss hitting her body is more than just his talent at knife-throwing, however.  He says, “If I had wanted to hit you, I would have.”  This quote hints at his need to protect her, the weakest girl in Dauntless.

As Tris’ rank in her faction falls when she gets beaten up through each fist-fighting test, Tobias takes her aside and teaches her a few tips of his own.  He cares about Tris enough to help her raise her ranking and stay in the faction, which means more than most would think.  The motto of the people in each faction is “faction before blood”, which means you care more about yourself and your place in the community than family or other people.  Tobias shows his selflessness and his love for Tris when he places her needs before his own.

Although Divergent is a romance movie with star-crossed lovers, it is geared toward both males and females because of the excessive gun usage and advanced technology.  I would suggest that you watch it if you haven’t already.  Although this PG-13 may not be considered a family movie, there was barely any bloodshed, and the rating was based upon violent actions and frightening scenes rather than gore.
