![During the Jazz Coffee House showcase, senior James Groceman focuses intently on his instrument to weave together the set. Having spent two years in the jazz band and three years in the concert band, Groceman sees the event as an important moment in his musical journey. “Music will always have a special place in my heart because [it] always helps me get through a tough time. As a performer, you get to show off what you've been working on, and as an audience member, you get to sit back, relax, and listen to what your friends or peers have been working towards this entire year,” Groceman said. “As a senior, I knew this was gonna be my last performance, but there will be more opportunities where I can go out and perform in other areas. ![”[Tuba is] the path that I've led down. I remember I wanted to play french horn, but I wasn't really very good at it, so I switched to something with a bigger mouthpiece, and that helped me. I think [the music I listen to has] kept me pretty open as a person, and open to a lot of new perspectives. [Through] listening to a lot of different kinds of music, I can understand a lot of people. Music also calms me down a lot, so I think it's helped me be a better person. My faith has been driven a lot by music. I like listening to gospels as well. Like in church, we sing a lot of songs and listen to a lot of music, and I think it really connects with me. My original dream, when I grew up, was to have my own band, perform gigs and write music, and that still is my dream. I've been doing a lot of college searching, and I'm trying to find which major I'm going to choose. My ultimate goal is to have a band and play. ![“In eighth grade, I took a video production class in which I learned the basics of video recording and photography. I just find it fascinating how, depending on how you look at things, or in a wide-angle position, it will look different to you. I also get inspired from seeing how great things look when you look at them from [different] perspectives. I couldn't help myself from just trying to find angles to make [where] if I were to take a picture, it would look really good. I think that's also how it started. The city can look pretty great if you take a look at it from an artistic view when taking pictures.
