Recent mass shootings in schools created a new risk for students. “I’m constantly anxious about school shootings. The idea that it could happen and the prevalence of [school shootings in America] is scary. ![In the 1950s, the first recorded spikes in global temperatures were recorded, and ever since, Earth has been in the midst of a disastrous climate crisis, as rising temperatures wreak havoc on susceptible regions and destroy animal habitats worldwide. Junior Nidhi Pejathaya helped found West’s Sustainability Council to create a space where students can educate themselves about climate change and do their part to preserve the environment. “When youre going out of your way to recycle [or] reuse your clothes to save water, youre saving people. ![For the past three years, Parkway has administered high school finals after winter break, a practice that proves to be detrimental to the success as well as the mental health of students. Everybody on our team knows about [the complications I had because of my] back. I had [a snag from my regular hobbies after going] through a surgery back in 2022; it took a lot out of me. I couldnt run for four months, and I was really out of shape [when] getting back into cross country. It was really hard for me. I [started to appreciate cheer] when I got to high school. [At first], I did it for fun in middle school just to say that I [had a hobby]. 2019 saw the selection of Living Coral, a vibrant orange color inspired by coral reefs. With undertones of gold, the energizing coral hue represented 2019’s playful spirit. In the age of social media, Living Coral encouraged and welcomed global connections with an optimistic and joyful mindset.
The 2020 Pantone Color of the Year was awarded to the rich and elegant Classic Blue. It was a familiar and traditional blue color and symbolized honesty and an offer of protection from the ever-changing world. Classic Blue represented both the reminder and call for the world’s desire for stability, peace, and resilience.
2021 was a special year for Pantone as they introduced not just one but two colors for the Color of the Year. The two colors selected were Illuminating, a vibrant yellow, and Ultimate Gray, a solid rock color. While the two colors are vastly different, together they symbolized how different elements can come together to support each other. Illuminating represented hope and positivity compatible with the strength Ultimate Gray gives.
Very Peri won the position of Color of the Year in 2022. With the perfect blend of blue and red, the bold purple shade represented the combination of creativity and daring confidence. A color not commonly seen or familiar, Very Peri highlighted 2022’s distinct identity and call for uniqueness.
In 2023, Pantone selected the vibrant color of Viva Magenta rooted in the red color family with hints of pink and purple. Its name deriving from the Latin word for life, Viva Magenta represented 2023’s universal spirit of unrelenting strength and bravery. Perhaps the most unique aspect of this color is the major influence technology played in Pantone’s selection for the first time.
