Learning about DNA charges, sophomores Lucas Escandon, Cami Levy and Ben Scott work together on a lab.
The group, in their biology class, had to adhere to COVID-19 restrictions. Being in close proximity with my classmates felt a little weird with the masks and seeing people after nine months of at-home learning. It didnt really impact the lab all that much, it was just [us] trying not to touch everything, so other people could touch the tools, Escandon said.

Picking up her paintbrush, senior Claire Hardy works on her next piece for AP Drawing. Hardy centered all of her projects on one sustained investigation question: What impact do people have on me? “We get to choose our topic and the materials we use which is nice because you can make the piece more personal,” Hardy said. “While the freedom of this class is great, it [also] poses a challenge because the options are endless when starting a new project”.

In Convergence Journalism class, sophomores Jordan Scales and Thomas Bruns watch the Inauguration Wednesday, Jan. 20. Despite it being President Joe Bidens inauguration, many viewers focused on Bernie Sanders mittens. “When I heard about the inauguration I didn’t really care too much about it,” Scales said. “I didn’t have any favorite parts of it because I don’t really care about politics. Bernie Sanders mittens looked pretty good though.”

In a game against Eureka Jan. 5, junior Tre Bell pushes the ball up the court to start a fast break while the defense is caught off guard. Bell has been playing basketball for the past 12 years. “To be honest I don’t usually think during games. I let my instincts [take] control because I trust my abilities and i’ve been playing for so long,” Bell said. “Before the game we were very eager to win because last year they [Eureka] beat us in the district semifinals so we owed them payback for that.”

Constructing towers from donated food items, Longhorn Council Junior Class President Paige Matthys-Pearce prepares to transport the boxes back to the gym foyer to get them tallied for the Parkway Holiday Cup. The five Parkway high schools joined forces to collect donations for the Parkway Pantry and dress up for spirit days in a friendly competition. Ive seen a lot more spirit week participation than in the past because were competing against the other schools and people are excited about beating them. However, its also just for a good cause. Weve done a food drive earlier this year, and had little participation, but the spirit week raises awareness and weve seen so much involvement this time around, Matthys-Pearce said. The competitive nature of the Holiday cup has motivated more people to donate to the Parkway Pantry. Just in the span of four days weve received almost 1,000 donations. As we go into winter break, its important that everyone in our community feels supported and has what they need.

Smiling at her Zoom screen, junior Tiffany Ung tutors a middle school student. Ung began tutoring this week and hopes to make a difference in the mindset of students regarding virtual learning. “I know everyone’s struggling in their unique situations right now, so I figured by tutoring, I might take some things off people’s plates,” Ung said. “I want kids to feel confident in their school work so they don’t feel bogged down by everything going on.”

Weighing her options, junior Shemaiah Saunders aims to pass the ball and cut to the basket for a shot. This season, Saunders has had to play her games while wearing a mask. It’s difficult [with] other kids playing sports trying to breath and feel comfortable, Saunders said. But COVID-19 hasn’t really changed much... I’ve known most of my teammates since elementary school, so it’s just cool to continue to play with them and graduate with them.
