Gesturing to her board, business teacher Kelly Kennedy teaches her sixth hour Web Design class. In addition to Web Design, Kennedy teachers courses on Brand Marketing and Multimedia. “I loved the creativity involved with all my jobs. I am sure there were plenty of other things I did not like, but like with most things, the longer I am away from the industry, the more positive the memories become,’” Kennedy said.

Carrying the ball forward, left defender and junior Ella Mercer dribbles away from Parkway Central seniors Kaylee Canoy and Brooke Taeckens. Mercer has played soccer since she was five years old and is a three-year member of the varsity team. “Soccer has always been a huge part of my life. I love using it as a way to de-stress and get exercise. No matter what I have going on outside of soccer, as soon as I’m on the field it disappears and I forget about it for an hour and a half,” Mercer said. “Soccer is both a mental and physical sport, you always have to be thinking about the next play, and where you need to be and where the next ball needs to go. I love getting to incorporate both the mental and physical aspect on the field.”

Running extemp draw at the West Fall Classic, senior Kathryn McAuliffe volunteers for her Speech and Debate team. The club has pivoted to a virtual format, however aspects of competition and preparation have remained the same. “I've met some amazing people, learned a ridiculous amount of information about everything, and I've become a much better speaker too. Getting to compete and talk with such intelligent and motivated people motivates me to become a better speaker and citizen.”

Adding her Chemistry textbook to the top of a stack, junior Katie Montgomery returns school supplies and books during the end of year locker clean out. Montgomery returned supplies on the first day students were allowed back inside the building since early March. “I’m glad West is taking the safety precautions seriously. It’s weird being back, but I’m glad everyone is staying safe,” Montgomery said.

While making s'mores during her Balancing Chemical Equations lab, junior Kyra DeBauch roasts a marshmallow. Chemistry students learned how to balance chemical equations through a visual experiment of making s'mores. “Being able to [make s'mores] piece by piece really helped me understand the curriculum,” DeBauch said. “I really think all of the kids in the class liked it because we were able to see what we were learning.”

Before the first round of the tournament, junior Grace O’Connor rehearses her Program Oral Interpretation (POI) performance at the Randy Pierce Winter Classic at Pattonville High School Dec. 7, 2018. Competitors create a performance using various published works of prose, poetry and drama around a central theme. “It hurts when people don't listen to your piece because you spend so much time working on it, and you do really pour your heart into it,” O’Connor said. “When people dismiss it simply because of your gender, it's so heartbreaking and for a lot of people it's not worth it [to continue competing]. It's not worth the emotional labor and the aspects of just not being heard because of what you look like or what your gender is.”

During second lunch, junior Angie Jia works on homework. As the daughter of immigrants, Jia cares for issues surrounding civil liberties and social causes and chose laptop stickers that would represent her passions. “My ‘Immigrants Make America Great’ represents my parents, who I am and who I feel should be empowered in America: immigrants. I value protecting and preserving our environment over industry so I have an environmental awareness sticker too,” Jia said. “My ‘Believe Women' sticker I got around the time of the Brett Kavanaugh hearings because I strongly agreed with what Dr. Christine Blasely Ford was doing by empowering women and believing their stories.”

In character, sophomore Reese Berry informs classmates in Kristen Collins’ fifth hour AP World class about Ivan the Terrible. On Thursday students participated in a speed dating activity to learn about historical figures highlighted in the course. “I made a love connection with Suleiman. We were going to take over the world because we were both terrible people, but had a lot of power,” Berry said.
