Laser focused, freshman Prateek Nemmali places a check against his opponent’s king. Although Nemmali won the second place trophy for board two at the state tournament, he was back on the boards in the library right after to practice for his next target, the Chicago Open Chess Tournament this summer. “I come to chess club every Ac Lab and it is my favorite part of school. Although I will continue playing this summer in Chicago I will miss playing and having fun with my friends in the club,” Nemmali said.

Juniors Wilson Gao and Alan Song and freshmen William Mayer and Prateek Nemmali play a timed match at chess practice during Academic Lab (Ac Lab). Gao appreciated Ac Lab practices as they provided a break from the rest of the school day. “It's just talking with people and playing well, just playing chess. People don't always know how to play chess, it can be a super foreign game. The interactions we have with people and how we can just play chess is fun,” Gao said.
