Senior and theatre department officer Dennis McMorrow acts in last fall’s production of “Boeing Boeing.” This spring’s one-act plays were canceled due to school closures. “I think most of the people involved in the show, including the directors, were pretty sure that the show wasn’t going to be put on once they called off classes. They had been planning their one-acts for months now, and now they don’t have the chance to see their hard work pay off,” McMorrow said. “[The school cancellation] has harmed my senior year, but I would rather everyone close to me stay safe during this time, so while I don’t like that things are being canceled, I understand that it is necessary.”

Handing a snow cone to a customer, employee and junior Audrey DeYoung fulfills her childhood dream of working at Tropical Sno Manchester, where she makes minimum wage. To reach a teenage demographic, DeYoung and her coworker created the Instagram account @trosnomanchester in hopes of having more teenagers drop by as customers. “What drew me to it was that it’s such a little shack and kind of a unique job to have,” DeYoung said. “Everyone I know goes there pretty often, so I knew I’d be able to see a lot of people from school. It annoys me when my friends are getting snow cones together, and I can’t be with them because I’m working.”

During the awards ceremony of the 2019 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Speech and Debate tournament, seniors Luke Donovan and Kristina Humphrey await their names to be announced with their placement. Donavon and Humphrey qualified for state in the duet event and placed second overall in the tournament. “I stayed in speech and debate [for four years] because the team and people from other teams in the district are like my second family. While competition can be brutal, it’s worth it to be with the amazing people in Eastern Missouri,” Humphrey said. “Speech has made me grow as a person significantly. It has given me the opportunity to spread important messages through unique ways of conveying them.” Photo by Fatema Rehmani.

Performing their Victorian England reprise of Romeo and Juliet, freshmen Trinity Mathis and Abbey Thompson act out a scene from their self-written script. The group had two days to rehearse the performance after submitting the written portion of their project. “Being able to act out the work that we put into it at the end, that was really fun,” Thompson said. “We went to Savers down the street and got costumes, trench coats and stuff to really get into character.”

Dropping into the splits, senior Clayton Jensen completes the final pose of their Mr. Longhorn dance. The pep rally was the first time Jensen showcased his splits during the dance. “[The pep rally] was definitely more special. It was a feeling that I won’t be able to experience ever again,” Jensen said.
