Collecting drops of various chemicals, sophomore Avery Hermann prepares to catalyze a reaction in Honors Biology 1. To observe how heat can impact the germination of a seed, Hermann did background research on seven different liquids before experimenting with three of his options. “I liked seeing the chemical processes in person as opposed to videos or readings. It definitely amplified my learning experience [and] it was cool to [be able] to choose from the chemicals and hypothesize which [ones] worked best,” Hermann said.

Cheering front and center, senior Jacksen McNeal steps up to lead the student section during the first home football game of the season. As one of the seniors running the Parkway West superfan Instagram account, McNeal helped pick the tropical theme and promote the game online. “It was super fun having the microphone [and] leading the student section — I’ve been here for four years watching all the other seniors do it [and] now I’m a senior. Even though we didn't win, we were all hyped and supported the team,” McNeal said.

Raising his arms, sophomore Ryan Mues cheers loudly for West’s opening pep rally. During the grade level song competition, Mues stayed energetic despite not knowing the sophomores’ song. “I don’t listen to a lot of pop music, but I was really excited when we won. I was next to some of my friends, and we were just getting as loud as possible and trying to get hype. The school events are always a lot of fun, and I’m trying to get more involved [this year],” Mues said.

Advocating through art, junior Ava Buehler paints the face of a little girl in a mural for her Challenges to Democracy class. The mural was a representation of the educational inequality women in Afghanistan faced. “I hoped people would see the mural and realize how privileged we were and how there were many areas in the world where people didn’t have the rights that they deserved,” Buehler said.

With a steady hand, junior Lucy Moore participates in a gel-electrophoresis lab in Biology 3. The lab procedure required the use of a micropipette to discover the length of DNA through electric waves. Moore and her partner, junior Nidisha Pejathya, have completed many lab experiences throughout the year. “I like how Bio 3 is set up. It's fun to work physically with something and see it for myself instead of doing it online,” Moore said.

Beaming at the audience, sophomore Juliana Rodgers performs in the theatre department’s improvisation show on May 3. Improv is a type of theater with formatted games and a one word prompt, typically from the audience. Rodgers has participated in five improv shows over the past two years with the Running with Scissors club and earned the position of junior improv captain. “My favorite thing about the show was Senior Panprov— all of the seniors on the team create a scene where they can play any [improv] game,” Rodgers said. “It was super cool because it was chaotic, but it was a good scene.”

Drawing the bow across her violin, senior Yena Ahn plays New World Symphony at the orchestra concert on April 30. The symphonic orchestra combined with the band for the last performance of the school year. “This was our seniors' last concert, so we were able to wear a different attire than the usual black to stand out,” Ahn said. “It's definitely bittersweet because I've done orchestra for four years and most of the people in symphonic [orchestra] are seniors.”

Arms flying above water, sophomore Max Moore dribbles the ball away from his defender at the junior varsity water polo game against Parkway Central on April 22. Moore relied on his speed to move away from his defenders in the pool but focused on mindset and communication while leading his team. “My typical mindset during a difficult game is to try to stay calm to set an example for everyone so they don’t panic. [I also] think of ways to get us back in the game. I usually think about things that keep me happy if a game gets tough. It keeps me calm and [I can] play better,“ Moore said.

Focusing on the goal, junior Sam Lair winds up to throw in the varsity baseball game against Eureka on April 16. Lair pitched during the game. Although the team lost 6-1 on April 16, they came back to win on April 17 at Eureka 8-4. “We lost pretty badly,” Lair said. “I wouldn’t really change anything because I pitched well and we went out and beat them the next day.”

Running towards the goal on her 8-meter shot, senior Amy Rein focuses on getting around her defenders. The varsity girls lacrosse team played against Westminster Christian Academy on April 4 and lost 4-9. “The most challenging part of the game for me was getting the ball back when we were playing defense. I am a midfielder so I play both attack and defense. When we were playing defense, we had some trouble getting the ball down the field without turning it over,” Rein said. “We overcame this by being persistent and trusting in each other. Even though we still made a lot of mistakes and it was kind of a frustrating game to lose, it gave us a lot of lessons to learn from. Now, for the rest of the season, we know what it takes and we are hungry to win our next games.”
