Receiving her first injection of the Pfizer vaccine, junior Mira Nalbandian sits at St. Louis Community College. Nalbandian was able to secure the vaccine prior to other people her age because she works in the field of education as a tutor at Kumon. “I had to wait a long time outside to get the vaccine. Once I actually was ready to get the shot I was a little nervous because I don’t like needles, but my nurse was super nice and it all went smoothly,” Nalbandian said. “Even with any inconvenience, it was completely worth it. I hope everyone who has the opportunity to get the vaccine takes it because that’s the only way we can move forward.”

Mercer has played soccer since she was five years old and is a three-year member of the varsity team. “Soccer has always been a huge part of my life. I love using it as a way to de-stress and get exercise. No matter what I have going on outside of soccer, as soon as I’m on the field it disappears and I forget about it for an hour and a half,” Mercer said. “Soccer is both a mental and physical sport, you always have to be thinking about the next play, and where you need to be and where the next ball needs to go. I love getting to incorporate both the mental and physical aspect on the field.”

In the library with her Honors English II class, sophomore Alexandra Toombs constructs a board game, Othello Clue. A Shakespearean twist on the original game, the objective is to try to guess who, where and with what item someone is trying to woo your (Othello's) wife, Desdemona. "I thought the assignment was very fun, because I got to create stuff and look at the play in a different way," Toombs said. "One hardship I encountered was I could not find game pieces, so I made my own out of Legos."

Acting as the presiding judge, senior Irene Yannankakis opens the hearing by banging her gavel and saying "Here ye here ye! All stand for Judge Irene!" Yannakakis, and the rest of her Crime and Law class, solved a case about a student whose parents sued the school for negligence when their son blew up his hand with a volcano, during a science project. "My favorite part was that I got to wear the judges gown and bang the gavel on the table super loud," Yannankakis said.

Soulier suffers from hearing loss and had difficulty hearing students through their masks. “It is so hard to get to know people without their faces, and students likewise can’t see me smiling,” Soulier said.

Givens spent the time catching up on "The Great Gatsby" while enjoying the warm weather. “Mrs. Kerpash told us we’d be able to go outside because the weather was really nice and she bought footballs, frisbees and other fun things,” Givens said.

Adding salt to the water, senior Donald Mahoney carefully measures ingredients to cook pasta in his Let’s Cook Together class Feb. 23. Mahoney took the class to improve his cooking skills, and so far the biggest challenge has been making sure he has everything he needs. “My favorite recipe is the no-bake cookies we made once,” Mahoney said. “I just love all of our cooking days.”

Flying down a snow-covered hill on a bright orange toboggan, sophomore Grant Kilpatrick sleds during his Competitive Sports and Games class Feb. 18. Due to the snowstorm earlier in the week, physical education teacher Tommie Rowe brought the students outside to sled for half the class period. “When Coach Rowe first told us we were going to get to go sledding, I was surprised because that's not something that I would think of doing during a class,” Kilpatrick said. “After my first few times going down the hill, normally I tried going down while standing. I tried this several times, but only getting about halfway down the hill before falling and rolling down the rest of the way. The funniest part about sledding for me was [when] we would lose control and the sled would flip. [My favorite moment was] just being able to try doing different things and have time to laugh and interact with classmates.”

Learning about DNA charges, sophomores Lucas Escandon, Cami Levy and Ben Scott work together on a lab. The group, in their biology class, had to adhere to COVID-19 restrictions. "Being in close proximity with my classmates felt a little weird with the masks and seeing people after nine months of at-home learning. It didn't really impact the lab all that much, it was just [us] trying not to touch everything, so other people could touch the tools," Escandon said.

Packing cookies in a bag, sophomore Lucy Connors volunteers to bag snacks for teachers at the United Hebrew Congregation. Volunteering is not new to Connors, as she also volunteered at a homeless shelter and served lunch. “I enjoy helping the community and making a difference whenever I can,” Connors said. “I wanted to volunteer because I wanted to use my time doing something that betters someone else.”
