Mindset Matters

Officer and junior Syndey Slaven discusses growth mindset and building community

If you’ve ever felt like you will never get smarter, like you have no motivation or like the instant gratification monkey is taking the wheel, you should give Mindset Matters a shot. Every first and third Thursday of the month at 3:00 p.m. over Zoom, the club meets to share experiences and tools to help with the growth mindset. New members can join the club by emailing officers and juniors Sydney Slaven, Paige Matthys-Pearce or Brinda Ambal. Further contact information is available on the Mindset Matters website.

What is the purpose of your club?

“The purpose of Mindset Matters is to provide a group of similarly minded people encouragement with goal setting and gather a group of students to focus on challenges we have with our goals and achievements and come up with ways we can overcome that. A growth mindset is knowing you can always improve and that your only limits are set by yourself, in contrast with a fixed mindset which is believing that your intelligence is fixed and relying on your talents. We always give real life examples like Ted Talks or stories from members. Lately we’ve [also] been splitting off into goal groups to encourage and help one another.”

What is your favorite part of your club?

“My favorite part of the club is the community it provides. For a long time, I had been learning different stuff about the growth mindset but I didn’t have an outlet to share that experience with others. I think this group provides a great environment where we can push each other and share tools to improve. I love the bond we form in this group and how even though our goals might be different, we are able to come together and form a group through those differences.”

Why would you love to have new members join your club?

“We’d love to have new members join our club because we love to get as many people informed as we can. Especially with something like mindset, we know a lot of people might not be as familiar with it and might not attend a meeting. Having a larger group just gives us more people to bounce ideas off each other. We love new people, we welcome new people, and we love passing on what we’ve learned to new people. When we have more people as part of this group, we can have a bigger impact on our world. You don’t have to know anything about the growth mindset to join this club; we are here to teach you about that and provide you with the resources to help you.”
