After weeks of perfecting their pieces, the doors opened on April 25 at Queeny Park to showcase artwork from students all across Parkway. Art teachers handpicked, matted, hung and displayed 130 pieces from over 150 options.
“It takes weeks before hand of choosing the art, matting it for presentation, name tagging the art and then organizing it to make sure we had the best work and a variety of work to show,” art teacher Peggy Dunsworth said.
Freshman Ronnie Bueltmann had three piece “One was in watercolor; the other two were both done in photoshop,” Bueltmann said.
AP Studio Art student Junior Kendall Welch had a wall in the art show featuring the six of her pieces.
“The common element in all of my pieces is that there’s always something coming out of a bag,” Welch said.
AP art students were required to develop a concentration of 12 works throughout the year. Their work was featured in the show with a written statement describing their thought process.
“This year was the first year that I had a whole board to myself, It was very exciting to have six pieces featured this year,” Welch said.
With a wider variety of art classes students can take in high school, junior Megan Barton was able to enjoy art more than she did in middle school by enrolling in Drawing I, Drawing II and Photography.
“I took art in elementary school and middle school and I never had a huge passion for it, but now I do,” junior Megan Barton said.
For the students, the art show was the equivalent of the orchestra’s final concert, or the football team’s final game.
“It does my heart good to see the show up and complete,” Dunsworth said. “I feel so good about the huge accomplishments of our artists and our art department.”
