Using balloons and newspaper to construct piñatas in Eileen Rodriguez-Kiser’s Spanish II class, sophomore Logan Wich and junior Ridwan Oyebamiji laugh as they glue together their project. The class has been exploring different types of birthday celebrations in Hispanic countries. “It was really cool to take a hands-on approach to learning Spanish,” Oyebamiji said. “Instead of just sitting at a desk, we were able to be immersed in the culture, which really deepens your understanding.”

Breidecker traveled to Anaheim for the National High School Journalism Convention. “I was really nervous because I was just doing it while I was waiting for the food to come and then everyone started watching. I felt so much pressure,” Breidecker said.

The one acts were directed by seniors in Amie Gossett's Directing class and took place in the theater April 17 to April 18. “Theater is important to me because it’s a chance to break out of everything I do on a day to day basis, and it generally just makes me happier,” Weston said.

Landing her triple jump, freshman Laurel Rakers competes in a track meet against Parkway South, April 10. Rakers worked with both coaches and older teammates to perfect her jumps and cites senior Tess Allgeyer as one of her role models on the team. “I just started this year. I really liked long jumping, and my coach wanted me to try the triple jump. I loved it," Rakers said. "The support from [the team] and the coaches keep you going.”

Each year, the senior class takes a field trip to Six Flags while the underclassmen take the ACT exam. “I’m done with the ACT and almost in college now, so it was really fun to be with everyone one last time,” Terry said.

On Thursday students participated in a speed dating activity to learn about historical figures highlighted in the course. “I made a love connection with Suleiman. We were going to take over the world because we were both terrible people, but had a lot of power,” Berry said.

Rallying together during a home game Oct. 8, senior Alexa Abney and sophomore Emma Breidecker shoulder bump at the start of the varsity softball game against Ladue High School. Throughout the season, the varsity team mentally prepared in between innings by hyping up their fellow teammates. “Usually before every inning the infielders ran around and high fived each other before the batter came out,” Abney said. “Us outfielders always got together and shoulder bumped or chest bumped.”

Other Parkway schools allowed students to walk out of the building, but West students were warned of detentions when they tried to leave. “When we tried to leave the actual building teachers told us to stop or we would get detentions, so we went out another door and stood along Clayton road, willing to face the consequences,” junior Maria Newton said.
