"There’s this nonprofit called the assistance league that my grandma volunteers at where she runs the book department area. My grandma could always use help and my grandpa is sometimes there too so I will go up there and help out sorting books or labeling so I get to spend some time with them and help out kids in need. I don't get to go to the school so I’m not able to see their reactions directly, but I hear a bunch of things about how they love the books and new clothing they received. Knowing how much they appreciate what we do makes me feel really good because I feel like what we do for them hugely impacts and shapes their future.” - Elena Potsou, 9

Read Across America Day aims to inspire and encourage kids to read more and help develop their reading habits at a young age. However, it is not only meant for kids; the holiday encourages reading at all ages. To promote reading at the high school level, the library has started a new tradition that challenges students to read books from each of the fifty states. “Hopefully [this] gets more people involved in reading — maybe finding a new author or a new book that they enjoy or reading something that they wouldn't have originally picked but takes them somewhere new to explore,” school librarian Lauren Reusch said.

Freshman Sydney Kinzy reads her published story. "When I write, I always write something deep from inside me which is embedded in each and every character and conflict, and that's what I'm sharing. I'm sharing life's problems and how people deal with them. I'm sharing the truths of the world I see around me. Really, that's what writing is all about for me," Kinzy said.
