The holidays behind the holiday season

Mira Nalbandian, Managing Editor-in-Chief December 14, 2020

As the U.S. transitions into the colder months, with a chill in the air and frost lining fields of grass, many Americans find the holiday season upon them again. Commercials advertise multitudes of gifts,...

Smiling at her Zoom screen, junior Tiffany Ung tutors a middle school student. Ung began tutoring this week and hopes to make a difference in the mindset of students regarding virtual learning. “I know everyone’s struggling in their unique situations right now, so I figured by tutoring, I might take some things off people’s plates,” Ung said. “I want kids to feel confident in their school work so they don’t feel bogged down by everything going on.”

Staying six feet apart, senior Laura Young collaborates with fellow teammates in order to run a smooth and efficient tournament. Weighing her options, junior Shemaiah Saunders aims to pass the ball and cut to the basket for a shot. This season, Saunders has had to play her games while wearing a mask. "It’s difficult [with] other kids playing sports trying to breath and feel comfortable," Saunders said. "But COVID-19 hasn’t really changed much... I’ve known most of my teammates since elementary school, so it’s just cool to continue to play with them and graduate with them."

Holding the Armenian flag and signs at a protest, juniors Mira Nalbandian and Anna Newberry work to bring awareness to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. As an Armenian, Nalbandian feels that it is important for individuals to recognize and be aware of global issues. “The American media hasn't really done a good job of bringing light to any of these issues and that's very harmful. People have the power to make change by organizing, but when we're not aware of what's going on, it's even harder to resolve these issues,” Nalbandian said. “This is hard for many Armenians because we just want recognition and help.”

Senior Braden Jensen sits on the stairs of his Jazz Choir classroom Nov. 19, his last day of in-person school for the semester. Jensen preferred in-person classes because it was easier for him to learn in a school setting, especially for choir. “Singing through a mask is pretty interesting because you had less air to breathe in and the sound that came out could be kind of muffled,” Jensen said. “[But] with [choir] it was much better to sing with each other in-person.”
