Beating the heat in style

As summer rolls in, the days start to grow longer and hotter. While most students start to pull out shorts, tank tops or T-shirts, hijabis and other women who dress modestly often struggle to find outfits that are cool enough for the hot climate. Hijabis typically wear headscarves as part of the Islamic religion that values modesty. To help hijabis who often struggle to find outfits, I’ve curated a few outfits I have previously worn in warm weather that I felt comfortable in.

For this outfit, start with a black long-sleeved shirt with a loose fit that is made of athletic material. You can pair it with any kind of baggy, wide-leg yoga pants. I also added a beige modal hijab and New Balance 350s to create a sporty look, and threw on some gold jewelry for a hint of elegance. Pearl and seashell charm necklaces are perfect for summer outfits because they add some class while remaining casual. This outfit is perfect for the gym, going for a run or just hanging around outside all day.

This outfit includes a beige button-down shirt made of viscose, which is perfect for hot days because it is known for being breathable and absorbent of any sweat or moisture. This is paired with medium-wash straight jeans, a beige modal hijab and lighter beige slides that contrast with the darker shades. I also added gold jewelry to accessorise while maintaining a tan-based colorway. This shirt is light and airy, yet not see-through. This outfit is a perfect casual yet put-together option for errands or day trips.

This outfit consists of a long brown abaya — a full-length outer garment worn by some Muslim women — and beige slides that contrast well with the different shades of brown. Also included is a light brown modal hijab that can be styled in many ways, creating a different look depending on how you wear it. Last, there is gold jewelry to accessorise and complete the look. The necklace has a pearl and seashell charm, which represents summer and the beach. This outfit is very light, cool and modest. The abaya’s fabric is made of linen, which creates a more breathable piece of clothing, and the hijab is made of modal fabric, a light, silky fabric that keeps your head and neck cool. This outfit would be perfect for a beach day or even just a trip to the mall. It’s casual enough for hanging out, yet can easily be dressed up.

This outfit includes a navy blue long-sleeved bodysuit tucked into a medium-wash pair of straight jeans, a white linen button-down, a white hijab to match and grey Air Jordan 1s to complete the look. The body suit is made of thin cotton — substantial, but still breathable. The jeans allow for a casual yet thoughtful look, perfect for summer. The button-down can be worn oversized and loose-fitting, allowing for a modest and stylish look: despite the length, it’s thin and doesn’t make you too hot. In addition, plain buttoned shirts are a must-have staple during the summer; they can easily be incorporated into many other outfits like the one pictured. You can pair one with anything, and it will look great. This outfit’s versatility makes it perfect for any occasion.
