  1. How did you feel when you heard that you were the finalist for the National Merit Scholarship?

I was excited, but more so when I was first identified as a semifinalist. It was cool to sit in a conference room with all of the other semifinalists when we found out we received the award.

  1. What are some characteristics you believe helped you achieve this award?

Throughout all high school, I have had a strong work ethic and dedication, allowing me to score high on standardized testing while being very involved at West.

  1. What is your academic area of passion and why?

Math is a passion of mine. I enjoy the subject and love how it relies on creative problem-solving instead of memorization.

  1. What are you planning to pursue in college?

Finance and Math.

  1. Do you know where you are going to college?

Mizzou, with a National Merit Scholarship as a part of the Cornell Leadership Program and the Honors College.

  1. What did you choose to write about in your main essay for the National Merit application? And why was it meaningful to you?

In my essay, I talked about playing elementary school softball. Although this experience was seemingly insignificant, a small moment in my time on the team showcased both my creativity and persistence, two qualities that have stuck with me to this day.
