Scholar Bowl

Co-Captain and junior Anna Csiki-Fejer hopes to pass down knowledge to the next generation

Scholar Bowl tournaments cover everything from quarks and bosons to the Bridges of Konigsberg problem to the Church of Scientology. To new members, this may seem daunting, but that is why every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 2:45 p.m. over Zoom, members meet to further their learning and hone their memory. New members can join the club by emailing club sponsor and math teacher Patrick Troy.

What is the purpose of your club?

“The purpose of Scholar Bowl is to have an environment where we academically challenge our students and provide a group environment where students have to work together. We cover knowledge that might not be covered in typical high school classes so it creates an avenue for personalized learning. We also have members from all different grades so they  have to work together.”

What is your favorite part of your club?

“Everytime I go to practice, I always learn something new. It’s really great to be able to hear something on TV or through the radio and be able to apply that knowledge to Scholar Bowl questions. It’s never too late to learn something. That’s something a lot of people might think, that they might be too old to learn something, but you’re never too old to learn and Scholar Bowl is a great place to apply that learning and help other people learn too.”

Why would you love to have new members join your club?

“Part of the reason is because our old members graduate, but another part is just being able to work our way down and mentor new people, because that’s how you keep your club going. We just want to continue the cycle of showing other people what our club is and how they can contribute and be a part of it. It’s a way to educate people who are younger than you and pass your knowledge down, and it’s only going to benefit the people who get to be a part of it. It’s a really welcoming community, you don’t have to be at any certain level to join. Everyone starts somewhere, so no matter your level or your grade, we’d love for you to join.”
