Inspired by businesses such as Etsy and Urban Outfitters, Senior Grace Bynum began her own jewelry business.

“I realized that making jewelry is something that I can do to create pieces that I want to wear and not at ridiculous costs,” Bynum said. “So I started to gather my supplies, online and in stores, to create necklaces and earrings that I’m willing to wear at an affordable price.”

Bynum began to sell her handmade necklaces and earrings through Etsy and Instagram.

“My biggest accomplishment was when I sold a few pieces online before,” Bynum said. “It made me happy that people I don’t even know are willing to and want to buy my jewelry.”

After using different platforms such as Depop and Instagram, Bynum favored Etsy and was drawn to it’s advocacy for handmade products. As a website that supports small businesses, Bynum decided to expand her business there.

“I love the community and how everyone on that website cares about their buyers,” Bynum said. “Each seller is different with packaging and most really care about the details. These are some things that you can’t get from chain stores.”

Bynum enjoyed finding an escape from everyday life, and feels that her fellow students would benefit from entrepreneurship.

“It helps you get your name out there while also being a creative outlet for yourself,” Bynum said. “I enjoyed being able to work on something bigger than myself and something other than school or work.”
