Chazen vs. Wayland is a longstanding campus tradition between social studies teachers Jeffrey Chazen and Annie Wayland; Wayland defended her title as champion and Chazen added to his now 14-year losing streak. "We all put our best foot forward and spent a couple of hours filling the carts, it felt great to be a part of something so neat and we all had a fun time doing it," Drake said.

It was a sad loss for Goedde last year when the season was canceled because he was supposed to play on the same team as his brother, but they lost that opportunity now that his older brother has graduated. “It was a really big disappointment because both my sisters were able to play together on the same team in high school. I was excited to be able to be with my brother on the court,” Goedde said. “We also had a really good lineup and team last year, and we were hoping we could get to state and do really well in the season, but that also got taken.”

Humme has played basketball since she was in 1st grade and she is now in her junior varsity basketball season. “Basketball is my zen. I've always made time for it. When I am on the court, I am solely focused on basketball,” Humme said. “I love being a part of a team and contributing all I have to give.”

Weighing her options, junior Shemaiah Saunders aims to pass the ball and cut to the basket for a shot. This season, Saunders has had to play her games while wearing a mask. "It’s difficult [with] other kids playing sports trying to breath and feel comfortable," Saunders said. "But COVID-19 hasn’t really changed much... I’ve known most of my teammates since elementary school, so it’s just cool to continue to play with them and graduate with them."

Blockers freshman Elise Frost and junior Carly Kuehl jump over the net to block the volleyball. Frost, having played since fifth grade, was the only freshman to make the varsity team. “I didn’t know what to expect [on varsity], but I quickly figured things out and don’t feel out of place or like a freshman; I just feel like another member of the team. This year was a lot of learning experience, and I liked the challenge of playing with people all older than me,” Frost said. “Volleyball taught me a lot about grit and never giving up when I want to accomplish something. I’ve learned when you take a risk and go for it, you can achieve anything. I couldn’t imagine life without it.”
