Linking arms with fellow classmates, freshman Becca Vierck holds a sign that reads, “You may have the right to bear arms, but I have the right to get an education.” On April 20, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, students staged a national walkout to demand action against gun violence. “Walking out was a crazy experience. I got to the marquee a little early and my heart was thumping out of my chest,” Vierck said. “This movement is important to me because we had a social media threat [at West], and that was right after Parkland, so I started thinking, ‘What if that was me?’”
