After leading 7-0 in the first quarter, the varsity football game against Normandy got canceled due to thunderstorms in the area on Friday, Sept. 9.
“We were playing kind of sloppy, and I think that the day off gave the team a chance to get refocused and get our heads straight for the game, although no one wanted the game to get cancelled,” running back and senior Nehemiah Colyer said.
The game was rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10.
“We came in, locked up, we got in, got out and went to work. We won the second quarter with 35 points in that one quarter. From there, the rest is history,” center and senior Logan Williams said.
Of the four home games the team has played so far this year, the Longhorns have won three and lost one.
“I say that the fighting spirit, not wanting to give up and being on the home turf not wanting to disappoint helped us play as well as we did. Sadly, with Summit we lost in overtime, and we weren’t about to let that happen again,” Williams said.
This year’s team consists of 26 seniors, 16 juniors, 23 sophomores and 33 freshmen.
“They like to compete. They enjoy playing together and being around one another. They want to get better each and every day,” varsity coach Jeff Duncan said.
This week’s Homecoming game will be played Friday night with a kickoff at 7 p.m. in the Longhorn stadium.
