Football requires athletes to run into other players at bone-crushing speeds, follow an exact play route for their position they play, all while having to evade a 200-plus pound linemen. In addition, the athlete must avoid any type of injury that could end there athletic career in one play.
Imagine the same objective of football, without pads! There is a sport that similar in athletic demand called rugby and it is available to anyone willing to join.
Senior Keith Pernell, a rugby participant that has wrestled and played football, distinguished rugby as his favorite sport.
“It’s one of the toughest sports I’ve played, especially with the concept of no pads, it really conditions you to be a true athlete and pushes you to your limit,” Pernell said.
The team also provides an opportunity to unite with other athletes.
“With rugby being a club sport you really get a full and diverse group of people from the whole Parkway District and it’s really cool to play with people from different schools,” senior Will Clark said.
Junior Bryce Glover, a rookie to the game, was recruited in June by upperclassmen.
“I’ve played a lot of sports in my life, and even though boxing is my favorite, rugby comes to a very close second,” Glover said.
