After a season of competing as a varsity captain, leading the state rankings for number of goals scored with 116 goals and 333 goals, the number 22, owned previously by alumni Annie Spewak, is being retired.
“Personally, I’m very honored and excited. It just reinforces my belief that hard work and dedication pays off,” Spewak said.
Spewak’s number is being retired because she was named as a US Lacrosse All-American in both 2012 and 2013.
“It serves as a reminder to keep myself committed to what I stand for and continue working towards my goals on and off the field,” Spewak said.
During the football game on Oct. 4, Spewak will be ceremonially honored during half time.
“I’m just happy for Annie. As the Activities Director, I’m more of an innocent bystander. I think the people who have more invested in her success are her coach, parents and teammates,” Brian Kessler said.
Spewak currently attends Robert Morris University, where she is on the division 1 lacrosse team. She will play for the team in the spring.
“Practices are very intense, but that also makes them productive. The transition from high school to college has been great. I love the intensity that every girl brings to the field because it pushes me to become better. Our lifting and conditioning sessions have been equally as challenging. It definitely takes your game to another level,” Spewak said.
Her team will play in the Pittsburgh Lacrosse for Hope tournament this Sunday.
“I expect for us to come out hard and ready to play. We’ll be working on new plays and motions, as well as adjusting to the new NCAA rule changes. Most of all, it will be a lot of fun and good competition,” Spewak said.
