Girls’ lacrosse competed in the Kirkwood/Webster tournament on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6. The girls started off their weekend with a 17-6 win against Kirkwood.
“We played like a team,” junior Jenn Welby said. “We had great looks, transitions and defense.”
Their win over Kirkwood advanced the team to the “winning bracket” for the second time in five years.
“It felt really good to go into the winner’s bracket. We went last year, but it got rained out so it was our chance to prove we are a great team,” senior, captain Paige Smith said.
The team faced Westminster first on Saturday. While Westminster scored first and led at halftime, the West team ended up beating Westminster 16-11.
“We definitely didn’t expect a close game based on the past few times we played Westminster,” senior, captain Maggie Blood said. “But we pulled it together and got hyped for our game against South, which are always competitive.”
By beating Westminster, the team moved to the tournament championship where they faced rival Parkway South.
“The girls came out hard and ready to play,” Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse Coach Emily Lovercheck said. “You could tell that they really wanted to win the game and the tournament. They played together as a team and got everyone involved. It was truly a team win.”
West defeated South 13-7 to win the championship. This is the first time West has ever won the tournament.
