Dressed in dark blue scrubs, juniors Mckenna Bendle and Kristin Wilson get ready for a day of work at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center. Bendle worked in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) while Wilson volunteered in the Outpatient Surgery Unit. “The most rewarding part is actually seeing the how the nurses and surgeons are able to take a patient, perform surgery on them, and help them in a way that they couldn't do themselves,” Wilson said. “Seeing the way patients are so happy when they find out the surgery went just as planned and that they are on their way to a successful recovery is so outstanding.”

Leah McCoy stands with the Spark! Students who won $1,000 Phelps Entrepreneurship grants from the Parkway Alumni Association in 2018. McCoy loved working with Spark! students because she thinks the students are what makes the program special to her. “It has been fun and inspiring to see how they evolve through the year each year. I've been so impressed with the way the students put themselves out there to network and build connections with mentors and others who can help them in the business community,” McCoy said.

Being able to do hands-on work helped Farooq solidify her passion for medicine and learn about different aspects of the field. “I want to go into medicine for sure. This camp opened my eyes to the variety of opportunities in the surgery field. Instead of just being interested in being a surgeon, now I’m thinking of anesthesiology or being an OBGYN,” Farooq said.
