As kids, many young girls and boys are excited by the recognizable red wrapper, home to a pair of crunchy wafers engulfed in creamy milk chocolate. Originating in the United Kingdom, Kit Kat has been the top choice for a nibble since 1935, yet the iconic snack has undergone substantial changes over the years. What started as a treat called “Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp” quickly branched out to include other flavors and even special edition colors and combinations for various holidays. Thanks to its explosive popularity in Japan, Kit Kat now comes in over 300 flavors.
Still, with so much diversity, some die-hard Kit Kat fans still cling to the original milk chocolate Kit Kat. In search of a better flavor and to set the record straight once and for all, we tried 10 wacky Kit Kats and rated them on the flavor of the bar, the crunch of the wafer and the fan favorite “snap” test. Each Kit Kat was graded in each of the three categories, adding up to a potential total of 120 points. These flavors are available through Ninjaz Treatz, an online store dedicated to selling authentic Japanese snacks. Here are the 10 Kit Kat flavors, ranked from last to first place:
Milk tea: 31
With a taste and smell akin to cleaning products, the milk tea was the lowest-ranked overall. It had an average crunch, but the snap was the worst of any flavor we tried. Our scorers had to take a drink from their water bottles to get the aftertaste out of their mouths.

Matcha: 33
The matcha Kit Kat had a somewhat promising exterior—a smooth light green outer layer—but as soon as the team tasted it, its fishfood-like flavor overpowered any sense of hope for the candy. Although matcha scored higher than milk tea overall, it had the lowest flavor ranking, earning only three points out of 40. Ironically, this Kit Kat is one of the most popular in Japan
Cookies & cream: 60
Cookies & cream was a definite step up from matcha and milk tea, scoring significantly higher in the flavor category. However, cookies & cream still had a subpar snap. This Kit Kat was decent, but without much of a pronounced flavor or crunch, it left a lot to be desired.
Milk chocolate: 63
As expected, the original Kit Kat had an average taste with a mediocre snap. The classic, signature taste of the original Kit Kat offers a familiar taste and serves as a standard in our ratings.
Strawberry: 77
The strawberry Kit Kat was aesthetically pleasing, with cerise packaging, and the fingers themselves had a pink outer layer. Despite being obviously artificial, the strawberry Kit Kat had a relatively vivid strawberry flavor. The snap and crunch factors were a bit lacking, and it left a sour aftertaste for some.
Gold caramel and milk chocolate: 89
The gold caramel and milk chocolate Kit Kat had a Twix-esque flavor to it, with a noticeable caramel flavor. The flavor and crunch factor were highly rated, but some noted a hint of sourness.
Strawberry shortcake: 93
The strawberry shortcake Kit Kat was a definite improvement over the regular strawberry. Although both strawberry flavors had a yogurt-like taste, this Kit Kat tasted less artificial than the other and had a more cake-like texture.
Strawberry gâteau chocolate: 100
The best out of the three strawberry-related flavors, strawberry gâteau chocolate had richer chocolate and the most accurate strawberry flavoring. The thin layers of strawberry cream filling were also a welcome surprise.
Chocolate mint: 105
Second only to dark chocolate, the chocolate mint flavor found a balance between its pleasant mint taste and its perfect chocolate flavoring. The snap was spot-on, along with the crunch aspect.
Dark chocolate: 106
With the perfect amount of cacao to not be too overpowering or bitter, the dark chocolate Kit Kat fought its way to the top of these rankings and snagged first place with its crunch factor, which broke the tie with chocolate mint.
Ultimately, dark chocolate won first place by a hair. Chocolate mint earned a close second place, and, in third place, strawberry gâteau chocolate. No matter the kind, Kit Kats remain a delicious snack to share with friends. Although not everyone will enjoy every variety on this list, with so many diverse flavors to try, there’s surely one out there for even the most niche palates.
