Have you ever wondered where to go when you want a sweet and bite-sized snack?
We have the perfect answer for you! Visit Dunkin Donuts for some Munchkins. You’ve probably heard about this delicacy at one time or another. After all, they’ve been around since the 70s! The classic practice of converting leftover doughnut holes into a sweet snack has transformed the pastry business immensely.
Join us in our journey to Dunkin’ Donuts — the company to thank for creating this sweet — to uncover which Munchkin will be your ideal munch time snack.
Dunkin’ Donuts is home to six different Munchkin flavors — Glazed, Glazed Chocolate, Jelly, Powdered Sugar, Cinnamon and Blueberry Glaze, although we opted to review only three. These treats are perfect for when you need a quick and cheap bite or for sharing with some friends. They are very budget-friendly, with prices under $10, and available in counts of 10 for $2.99, 25 for $5.99 and 50 for $9.99. The Munchkins are also very easy to purchase, available in most Dunkin, both in-store and through the drive-thru. They are especially great for students running late to school, as purchasing takes just a few minutes with the store’s fast customer service. However, the more popular Munchkins tend to run out quickly, leaving only a few flavors available towards the evening. So if there’s a certain flavor you’re looking for, it’s best to pre-order beforehand or buy them in the morning when they’re fresh and fully in stock.
Powdered: 6/10
The powdered donut is a unique Munchkin because of its powder-coated outside. Its texture surprised us the most. We didn’t appreciate the thickness and feel of the donut, which seemed tough and hard to break apart. But as soon as we took our first bites, the powder exploded in our mouths, giving us a light and airy bite. The Munchkin maintains a very careful balance between powder and donut, but at times, the powder was overpowering so we couldn’t taste the bread anymore. The sugary coating gave us a great first impression, but our enthusiasm quickly dwindled after we discovered a cakey inside, which, like the donut’s outside, was just a little too hard for our liking. Smell-wise, we could
sense a minor touch of powdered sugar. Because of this, the powdered donut wasn’t the best in the box but it still gave us a vibrant experience.
Blueberry: 8/10
The blueberry donut is a delicious and flavorful treat for those who love to munch on something sweet but not too sweet. The pastry is guaranteed to make your mouth water, from the soft texture of the donut to the rich blueberry scent to the delicious compliment of the berry to the bread. We appreciated the softness of the bread, which was lacking in the powdered Munchkin. However, the small amount of sweetness was something we didn’t like. We’d love to taste more sugar, especially because this Munchkin leaned more toward a muffin than a sweet pastry. But if you’re a berry lover, this Munchkin is a berry-fic fit for you.
Glazed: 4/10
The last donut on our list is the classic glazed donut. It is something not too sweet but enough to keep us wanting more. The glazed donut wasn’t one of our favorites, with little to no smell and very little flavor. The smell wasn’t too big of a concern, as it makes sense with limited ingredients; however, we would love to see more glaze complimenting the bread. The baking timing and temperature gave the glazed donut a soft and doughy inside. At the end of the day, the donut has expansive room for improvement, but it’s still great for someone who wants a classic and simple bite.
Overall, with all the Munchkin flavors, we enjoyed what we ate at Dunkin. Although some of the flavors weren’t what we expected, they were exciting. Our favorite Munchkin was the Blueberry Munchkin and one that we recommend to first-timers. We didn’t love the Glazed Munchkin, but it is still something you should try and discover. This trip was a great experience, and we recommend people try it.
