“[I want to do something in life] that interests me. [I’m] going to keep that [same mindset throughout my] life for a long time and [am] probably going to have a job related to [my interests]. You have to do things that you enjoy, and that makes you happy because that is what you’ll be putting your life and all your blood, sweat and tears into. If you don’t you could end up in a bad situation. You need to [prepare yourself], learn about the subject [that intertwines with your interests] and prepare yourself for what could be coming [in the future].” - Puneeth Thotapalli, 9

“One of my hobbies is sewing. I love to sew, and I got into it in eighth grade when I took a class in middle school. We made a stuffed animal and a duffel bag, and I thought it was so cool. Ive been sewing different things such as clothes, quilts and redoing vintage clothes ever since. I have only taught science, although I taught [ in fourth grade] summer school for about five years with my mom and aunt. My most memorable moments are my most fun [ones]. What makes them memorable is when we have Homecoming weeks and dress-up days. I love having an excuse to dress up like a total moron, and I love making up costumes. I have an entire rack of costume stuff like Halloween costumes, so I love that. Being a science teacher here was my first job, and Ive been here ever since. Ive been teaching at West throughout, but I will eventually retire [from my current role].” - Colleen O’Toole, Science

“I do cross country; I get a shirt [for running five hundred miles over the summer] and running those miles improves your endurance. I didnt think of the five hundred miles as, ‘I have to run five hundred miles.’ I [have the mindset that], six days a week, I have to run. [I] started [running] about four to five miles a day and was able to build up over the course of the summer. Its just that I had my goal; I wanted to be on varsity. I wanted to get the red legs this season, so I had my goal in mind. Red legs are a new set of warmups made up of a nicer jacket, thin hoodie, and red sweatpants, given to anyone who runs sub-18:15 in the 5k [race]. They have been a goal since I joined [the sport in] sophomore year. They are often a mark of being on varsity as well and can make you feel like you made it. I guess the same thing is true for motivating myself for school; I have my goal of keeping up my grades. Stay involved with something because its good to have multiple [hobbies] going on. Make sure to decide what you want your focus to be. You can be involved in multiple things, but, if you want to focus on sports and school, make sure to keep it balanced. Enjoy your high school years. Have some passion in what you do.” - Ryan Smith, 12

“I’m passionate about being close to others around me. Good friendships influence my life when I can have a lot of people around me, and it makes me happy to see other people happy too. I put myself in a lot of new social environments where I’ll pursue new hobbies and meet new people in those spaces. I got into Dungeons and Dragons, car mechanics, and video games which is where I mostly meet new people. One of my favorite things to do with my friends is going on walks since it’s a relaxing activity and puts you in a more personal situation where it creates more room and time to talk to them. I also talk to my friends and see if they know anyone new in my areas of interest, and then I’d go and introduce myself to those people. Overall I value building new and current friendships, and I hope to be able to continue that for the rest of my life.” - Mason Sehi, 11
