As one of the most nostalgic TV and movie franchises of all time, a Power Rangers movie has not been released since 1997 at the hype of the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” Shift into turbo to March 2017 with “Power Rangers.” The movie is a reboot for the franchise which features characters from the Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers television show.
The plot starts out when the Red Ranger aka Zordon, sacrifices himself to ensure the villain Rita Repulsa can’t take back Earth’s Zeo Crystal. Zordon releases five Power Coins to find the next worthy five Power Rangers. Later, in present day, we meet a senior named Jason Lee Scott and he goes to Saturday detention for a prank he pulled on his football team. While in detention, Jason meets two different teens named Billy Cranston and Kimberly Hart. The trio ends up at a mine where Billy and the friends uncover the five Power Coins. Two other teens Trini and Zack are also present during the discovery and each teen takes one coin for their own, gaining super powers.
Most of the corny jokes from the show are absent in the movie, but the story goes in the other direction, offering audiences a more darker story on the origins of the Power Rangers which might be too much for children. The cast is decent to play the Rangers but it is a toss-up from scene to scene whether the acting is sincere, decent or if the story is even worth watching. Most of the movie was the teens trying to morph with little action of the actual Power Rangers.
Overall, “Power Rangers” is a great movie if you are a already a fan of the television show. People who are just casual movie goers that aren’t huge fans of Power Rangers will not enjoy this movie. This is one of those movies where it is more about action than story.
The Parkway West Pathfinder gives “Power Rangers” a 7/10.
