During Boys Chamber choir, on March 9, members of the Parkway Alumni Association entered into music teacher Brian Parrish’s class with a surprise, he was named The 2017 Albert Award recipient.
“When they entered my classroom I was surprised – nothing like this has happened before! I feel overwhelming gratitude for my students, colleagues and community. The wonderful people around me make it a pleasure and an honor to do what I do,” Parrish said.
Each year, the Parkway Alumni Association honors three exceptional teachers in their first through fifth year of teaching with The Albert Award. The award recognizes new teachers energy and enthusiasm that they bring to their students, as well as their creative and innovative practices they use in the classroom.
“We then have a committee made up of alumni, former teachers and past Albert Award winners who review the nominations and choose one teacher from each level – elementary, middle and high,” Parkway Alumni Alumni Association Director Leah McCoy said.
The award recipients receive $1,000 cash prize and a plaque.
“The prize money will make it easier to support my wife and two young children at home,” Parrish said.
The Albert Award is in honor of the late Dr. Al Burr, a retired teacher, coach and life-distinguished principal in the district. The Albert Award is sponsored by the Parkway Alumni Association and funded by the Educators Make-A-Difference Fund for the purpose of recognizing those teachers who are inspiring others at the very earliest stages of their careers.

Dr. Burr is deceased as of the end of last year, so perhaps this article might have been worded a bit differently. He was a man and educator of the highest magnitude.
