The first Missouri Math League (MML) contest is being held after school on Wednesday, Oct. 19, sponsored by Math teacher Patrick Mooney and meeting in his room.
“It’s global math, it isn’t just the math you learn in class. It’s going to be a mixture of number theory, Algebra and Geometry, but the more you take it, the better you get,” math teacher Ruth Knop said.
It is a series of six contests held throughout the school year, each one consisting of six questions in 30 minutes. When the time limit is up, the correct answers will be read, giving students instant feedback on how well they did.
“I think a lot of people feel like they have to get a five or six for them to rank statewide, but really, if you can attend all six and you score a two or a three, at least, on each one, then you can probably place statewide,” Knop said.
Math contests are open to all students, although it is recommended that students be enrolled in Algebra II or higher. Mu Alpha Theta students can use these contests to go towards their required three contests for the year.
