Science, english and math teachers, as well as a technology support specialist, custodians and DHH captionists are amongst the new faces in the halls. Six of the new staff members work only part time, while the others, such as technology support specialist Kevin Adea, serve full-time.
“I’m basically the person who fixes [everything] technology-wise from the school,” Adea said. “I’m the same as Hal Brown, I guess. Right now, since he has a lot more experience than I do, he is helping me learn the ways throughout the school.”
Adea, who grew up and went to high school in Switzerland, graduated from Webster University in May 2016.
“I was just looking around for a job and found the school district, [and] that’s how I ended up here,” Adea said. “I was trying to look for a job as web developer. A type of job where I would be coding or designing a website or application, since during my university classes I really enjoyed coding.”
Unlike Adea, the new biology and chemistry teacher Paul Hage had several jobs before being hired to West.
“I had been teaching a Fort Zumwalt for nine years and John F. Kennedy for one year before that, but my family moved here, we live fairly close to the school, so I just put my name out there,” Hage said.
Hage attended the University of Missouri where he earned his undergraduate degree in biology.
“I had planned on being a field research biologist,” Hage said. “But I ended up teaching a college lab class and I really loved it. So that’s what got me interested in being a teacher and now I just love it.”
Along with Allison Privitt, Hage is one of two new science teachers.
“I think the best thing about West is just the sense of community,” Hage said. “Everyone is proud to be here and they have a good sense of school spirit.”
Unlike other new teachers, math teacher Emily Lovercheck had been a member of the community before being hired as a teacher.
“So 10 years ago lacrosse became school sanctioned and they had an opening for coaching,so I applied,” Lovercheck said. “It is actually my 10th year coaching lacrosse here at Parkway West. So I’m a new face to the department but not to the school.”
Lovercheck has planned on being a teacher since she was in the third grade.
“I love the community feeling at West High,” Lovercheck said. “I feel like everyone works together and is helpful. It is just a great building and atmosphere to be apart of.”
