Thursday, Feb. 4, students and parents piled into the stands to watch the girls swim meet against Rockwood Summit at their senior night.
“The team hung up posters, made us fat heads and bought us cake and flowers,” senior Grace Miller said.
As the seniors were individually announced and had their bios read, they walked around the pool to the diving board where they would then finish with a splash.
“Ironically, I’m terrified on diving boards,” senior Kirsten Petersen said. “So instead of diving, I did my signature ‘Kiki Smash’ jump where I flex my arms and yell ‘Kiki Smash!’”
Miller believes that this is a very close, tight-knit team, brought together by dedication.
“Swimming is a competitive sport, and you bond over how hard the practices is,” Miller said. “We also had morning practices twice a week. Waking up was dedication.”
The team finished the year strong with three seniors won individual races. Irene Frederick won the 200 IM and the 500 Free, Gabi Vieira won the 50 free and the 100 fly, and Megan Hitchcock won the diving competition. As a result, the team was victorious against Rockwood Summit.
“I’m so sad that this is my last year on the team, but I’m also happy knowing I made the most of my time here and left my mark at P. West,” Frederick said.
The seniors left with a 14-3 record, and four years worth of memories.
“I’ll miss all the times we skipped yards without the coaches knowing, all of our team dinners and sleepovers, and going to state,” Frederick said.
