The field hockey team implemented a “Little Sister” program this year, pairing up a veteran player with a newcomer, to help them with skills and overall team bonding.
“The little sister program allows are veteran player to take on a leadership role within our program and gives our new team members a person they can go to if they have questions or need advice about field hockey, classes or other activities at West,” varsity coach Dawn Callahan said.
The varsity players were encouraged to watch the JV games and help their little sister with skills and fitness. In turn, the little sisters watched the varsity games to pick up tips on how to improve.
“The little sister program was a great idea in theory, but we needed more opportunities to get to know them, and bond with them,” senior captain Emma Ratliff said.
The program was put into effect in practice as well, with drills aimed at putting teamwork and skills together.
“We did a lot of running activities with our sisters, and had to finish together as a team, as sisters,” senior Katie Bowen said.
The team, with 11 wins and five losses, set their sights on the state title, with the first game this week.
“My hopes for this postseason is for this team to make to the round of 16, and having nine seniors and eight returning starters from last year team is a big positive,” Callahan said.
The team was eliminated in the first round of games in 2014, but is ranked higher due to the 11-5 record.
“I think our ball movement and possession skills as a team have improved greatly from last year, individually players are playing with more confidence and trying more advanced skills,” Callahan said.
The team is set to play Marquette Catholic on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the home stadium.
