By the end of the season, the boys’ varsity golf team had a total score of above 500 for all of the tournaments they competed in. Varsity was 5-4 in conference, while JV was 9-4.
After the team’s season ended, junior Peter Back individually competed at state on May 19-20 after scoring a 75 at sectionals. Going into the competition, Back aimed for an All-State title. Senior Nathan Talbot was also second team all-conference.
“I did not like being the only one from my team to advance this far because I wanted my team to be there,” Back said.
At the beginning of the season, Back hoped to make it past districts and proceed to sectionals. He practiced daily with his fellow teammates and worked on his individual skills on his own time as well.
“I did not have much time to prepare for state because of finals. I was anxious before and after I was disappointed but I still think I learned a lot, especially just to not get a big head in situations like this,” Back said.
Next year, Back hopes to win state.
“Golf has tested my patience a lot. I have to control my temper after a bad shot and after 10 steps, I try to forget about the shot and think about the next one,” Back said.
Before games, the players warmed up by putting around, loosening their swings and stretching.
“Golf has taught me honesty because you can easily play the wrong ball. There are no referees out there. It’s a gentlemen’s sport,” junior Brian Ingberg said.
The players that will continue on their high school golfing careers next year plan to exceed their accomplishments from this year, individually and as a team.
“They did well this year. Several of last year’s JV players stepped up their game to be able to contribute to the varsity results this year. Most of the varsity team returns so we should see even better results assuming they continue to work on their games in the off-season,” golf coach Greg Schade said. “I look forward then to challenging for the conference title and advancing more players to the state tournament.”
