Whether they are making mall appearances to introduce their PacSun fashion line or hanging out with friends at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Kylie and Kendall Jenner are always making a statement. Their stardom began on the hit reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians, but the teen stars have maintained a young adult fan base with their fashion line and large presence on social media. Being themselves and beginning a career they love at such a young age has been an inspirational example of self branding for driven teens.
“The business success of Kendall and Kylie Jenner should be inspiring for teen students. These young women have started successful clothing lines for juniors, including distressed jeans and studded backpacks for PacSun. The success of the Jenner sisters is hopefully motivation for students with business ideas to accomplish business success for themselves, as well,” Business teacher Melissa Lake said.
At age 18, Kendall has nearly eight million followers on Twitter while her younger sister Kylie, age 16, has six million. Their openness to share their lives and business, often promoting their new line for Steve Madden, attracts fellow teens who share in the Jenner sisters every move. Both girls also have popular Instagram accounts that document their every move with assorted pictures.
“Social media is a great way for the Jenner sisters to market their product lines. 73% of teens are on a social network. If teens have a business idea, social media is the best way to reach their market,” Lake said.
Young adults have so much that they can pull from the Jenner sisters for inspiration: their positive use of social media, drive at such young ages and ability to block out the doubters. Their most important inspirational message, though, is to always stay true to yourself.
“We work a lot but we have fun with it,” said Kendall in a recent radio interview.
