The storied franchise of the St. Louis Cardinals has permanently cemented St. Louis as a baseball city, but the NFL and NHL also have strong presences. Professional sports teams have been anything but quiet in the gateway to the west recently. The Cardinals, Rams and the Blues all have made drastic changes to their lineups, and all are in serious contention to be good competitors for the 2014 seasons.
The Blues made a blockbuster trade just before the deadline earlier in the year, exchanging Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, William Carrier and two future draft picks for Ryan Miller and Steve Ott from the Buffalo Sabres. The team has remained towards the top of the power rankings throughout the season, boasting a 49-16-7 record with 105 points, which is tied for first in the NHL (as of March 24). The Blues are also the only team in the Western Conference to have already clinched a playoff spot.
The Rams have been relatively quiet this off-season. They have made only a few low key free agent signings in undrafted rookie cornerback Greg Reid, quarterback Shaun Hill, defensive end Alex Carrington and wide receiver Kenny Britt while also losing five starters from last year. The players lost to free agency are Cortland Finnegan, Darian Stewart, Mike McNeill, Shelley Smith and Chris Williams. The team nearly lost standout guard Roger Saffold to the Raiders, however a failed physical voided a five-year $42 million contract. Saffold then signed a five-year deal with St. Louis for $31 million. The Rams also hold very valuable draft picks, #2 and #13 overall. General Manager Les Snead has expressed interest in trading either of the picks in exchange for another mega-deal similar to the infamous RGIII trade, which brought in key starters Alec Ogletree, Janoris Jenkins, and Michael Brockers, along with the #2 overall pick in this upcoming draft. While the Rams still have a lot of holes to fill in before the season begins, they’re equipped to do just that and more given that they make safe and good decisions.
Last but certainly not least, the reigning NL champion St. Louis Cardinals. The Birds made big news earlier in the year by dealing out hometown hero David Freese and Fernando Salas to Los Angeles in exchange for center-fielder Peter Bourjos and prospect Randal Grichuk. They also signed second baseman Mark Ellis and shortstop Jhonny Peralta. Peralta made headlines in 2013 for his involvement in the biogenesis performance-enhancing drug scandal, so his ability to play will be interesting to see. Long time Cardinal Chris Carpenter decided to retire as well, so the Redbirds will be looking much different this year. It seems as though the Cardinals will still be a powerhouse team next year, boasting what looks like one of the best pitching rotations in the league complimented by a team full of young playmakers like Matt Carpenter and Kolton Wong.
