The aisles of CVS stores are flooded with chocolates, candy, flowers, jewelry and stuffed animals with the “Be Mine?” phrase coined on them. What day is fast approaching? Valentine’s Day! With childhood memories of home made cards and candy fading, Valentine’s Day takes on a new meaning as teenagers grow up.
“Valentine’s Day used to be a big deal when we were in elementary school. It was an innocent day to play games and give out candy and make cards for our friends,” senior Kristen Mueller said. “Now no one really keeps up with any childhood traditions and everyone just sort of does stuff on their own.”
In Parkway elementary schools, students had the opportunity to bring candy to school and make cards for their classmates. Part of the festivity filled day was also taken to allow students to create their very own custom shoe box that was used as a “mailbox” to deliver friendship or even secret admirer cards.
“Everyone looked forward to the Valentine’s Day celebration,” junior Taylor McNeal said. “The moment when we opened our shoeboxes to read all of the cards our friends made us while eating like a pound of candy was the best part.”
Now, the childish notions are over and the real romance is beginning.
“My boyfriend is taking me out to dinner at a surprise location where we’re going to exchange gifts,” junior Natalie Folkins said.
Even with a basketball game to play on Friday night, junior Lee McMullin still plans to celebrate with her boyfriend as well.
“He’s coming to my basketball game on Friday and making me a sign so I’m really excited about that. After the game, he’s taking me out to dinner hopefully to not only celebrate Valentine’s Day, but a win as well,” McMullin said.
Regardless of being in a relationship or not, people all over the world continue to recognize the holiday by spending it with their loved ones.
“For me, it’s basically a day to sit with my best friends and watch sappy romance movies while eating multiple boxes of chocolate without being judged,” Mueller said.
