With holiday season approaching, both the orchestra and the choir are preparing for their final performance. They played a mix of secular holiday music and everyday music. The choir performed on Dec. 10, and orchestra performed on Dec. 12.
“We all sing festive music that makes everyone feel cheery and happy. It makes it really seems like the holidays! The music we all sing together fosters the holiday spirit throughout the school,” junior Patricia Busch said.
The orchestra played seasonal music, but the winter performance did not differ from other performances.
“I play the viola because I love the way everyone can express themselves through music: we can forget all the stress of everyday life and just play for a while. It’s awesome,” junior Evan Wright said.
Both groups of performers must wear the same garb for their performance: black gowns for girls, and black shirts for boys.
“I love the gowns because they are long and flowing, which makes it easy to play cello. And they have a little diamond at the neckline so that they have the perfect amount of sparkle! But I don’t represent the majority of opinions about the dresses: most people hate them,” sophomore orchestra student Rebecca Su said.
As well as performing on Dec. 12, all-state orchestra auditions are also being held on Saturday, Dec. 21. If students do well at these tryouts, they are gathered to play with everyone else who made the cut, forming a choir made up of the best high school musicians in the state.
“Everyone who makes all-state gets to play with the best other high-schoolers in the state. It’s kind of intimidating and it’s really hard to make the cut. But if you make it, you get the honor of playing with so many other skilled people. It’s awesome,” Su said.
